…....

Cosa mi dici a riguardo?

Ottimo. L'intervista sarà online a breve.

Hi Herma, I'm Roby Comanducci (head and founder of Cathouse Italy www.cathouse.it) I would like you to tell me about your band and your latest album. I have been following you from the first album and I consider you a valid and innovative band.

The first question is simple; tell me about how "Starstruck" was born, if the compositional process is unchanged compared to the previous albums and ... what do you expect as a response from the public?

Hi Roby and Cathouse Italy, happy to be here! With “STARSTRUCK” we wanted to push further the limits of what we had done up to that point. We don't like to repeat ourselves, and we wanted to create feelings of continuous "surprise" throughout the album. Disconnections, dissonances, odd times when you least expect them, all without upsetting our basic sound, and maintaining that catchy that has always distinguished us. Easier said than done ... :) The response we expect we hope is obviously favorable, but I confess that even when they tell me "it was not what I expected" it gives me some satisfaction!

I consider your music energetic and with a pinch of originality. It seems to me that - at times - something of Rob Zombie or early White Zombies emerges. What do you tell me about it?

There's definitely that kind of slightly punk drive typical of WHITE ZOMBIE, it's the kind of groove we've always recognized ourselves in ...

The new album is decidedly aggressive even if it always has a soft and captivating melodic line. What is - if any - the biggest difference from "Element of Sex" and "Hell over Hell"?

STARSTRUCK is a heavier and more aggressive album, the son of dark times. Pandemic, war, extreme climate change ... It is difficult for an artist not to be heavily influenced by these events that are marking our time. As far as we could, we tried to keep some of the party mood that is dear to us anyway, but the music has a mind of its own and takes you wherever it wants …

I have always closely followed bands with a female voice especially in the metal and alternative sector. I believe that the female voice gives a greater charge - in some cases - than male colleagues. Do you agree?

I don't know - probably in recent years the female timbre proposals have been much more interesting. Screaming and growling have killed the metal voices a bit, which in my opinion all tend to be a bit alike. I can't think of modern male counterparts of the great voices of the past like Ronnie James Dio, Rob Halford, Steven Tyler, Paul Stanley ... let's talk about voices loaded with personality. Without going that far back, I can't hear the new Cornells, the new Vedders, the new Hetfields. Corey Taylor, Manson, Zombie, they too are among my favorites, but they are still rumors that "exploded" more than twenty years ago ... Mine is clearly a strictly personal point of view based more on the "vibe" than on the technique. There are obviously hundreds of technically flawless young people ... and yet …

You define yourself as "intergalactic nomads": can you please explain to me this "story" you have created about your band and also where does your flashy and certainly effective look come from?

It all happened very organically, but also very quickly. We simply wanted to create a universe we like to live in every day, made up of the things that attract us most. The recurring themes are the classic ones of rock'n'roll, seasoned with a little more horror and science fiction! Sex, motors, the occult, the afterlife, comics ... and even a bit of romance here and there ... with a lot of "attitude" of strong female figures worthy of Russ Meyer films! It is certainly more fun to face my days as an "intergalactic nomad" than as a simple girl who grew up among the high-rises of Rome ... If the universe doesn't give you what you want, then it's time to create your own, of universe ...! ahahahahahah

I've seen - and even reviewed - the new Venus 5 you're in in the women's lineup. Always female singers ..... so what about the current music scene and, if you want, can we name a female singer that you particularly appreciate?

VENUS 5 is a very funny international side-project which I have chosen to join with great pleasure. The music scene today, as we know, is quite complex. Metal is increasingly distant from the charts and the typical audience less and less young, unfortunately. Having said that, playing abroad, however, you realize that the market is much more open, and the audience much larger and more receptive. I think that I am underlining some obvious things probably, obvious ones that however remain pernicious in Italy. My favorite singers ... OMG - there are dozens of singers I love! Lzzy Hale, Taylor Momsen, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Sharon Den Adel, Amy Lee ... I'm definitely forgetting crucial names! :)

I am also the dj of the Cathouse Italy project and I often play some of your songs and people enjoy dancing. Do you like that your songs are also "danceable"?

Certainly, it is one of the trademarks of our songwriting and we really care!

You have recently signed up for the careful and valid Frontiers Music. How did your collaboration start and what do you think?

Frontiers' proposal came unexpectedly, because we knew they generally promote a more classic hard rock. With pleasure, I must say they proposed themselves in a very clear and reliable way, which unfortunately we cannot say about other entities that populate the undergrowth of the business. Communication is everything, and Frontiers has so far been very precise and helpful with us, above all leaving us complete artistic freedom. We expect great things from this journey together! :)

A particular question: how would you define yourself as an artist and singer and -also- as a person with only one adjective? And why this adjective?

Very difficult question! Ahahhaha - I would say "manic" maybe ??? I tend to be a bit of a control-freak and love that everything is done to the best of our ability - and beyond! And maybe every now and then, it can happen to exaggerate! It's a typical feature of aliens, it seems! ;)

Optimal. The interview will be online shortly. Thanks for your time and congratulations on your music again!

Assolutamente no!

Hi guys, here is Nikki from Cathouse RnR Project Italy (www.cathouse.it). I just reviewed latest Chaos Magic album, Emerge, and it really impressed me. I would like to ask you a couple of question on it.

First, the press release just classifies it as “Heavy Metal”, and I find funny after all, how many things under this musical genre. I do not like to classify bands into genres, but I want to hear from you, what are your musical references when writing and playing your music? Since you have a great experience in making music, did you have any influence at the beginning of your career that you do not consider any more important or, at the opposite, did you get recently something that really influenced you? (both from the “heavy metal” scene or not of course)

We have different sources of inspiration, but you can basically detect symphonic, melodic, alternative metal with traces of electronic elements and a lot of pop, especially when it comes to song structures and memorable choruses. So yes, if you see us in the big picture and without a lot of detail, we could be classified as a Metal band, but it’s much more than that. As for my influences early on, I was a lot into Lacuna Coil and Within Temptation when I was writing for Aghonya’s Oxygen album, and I think you can see certain elements of that in my current music too, although now I look further for inspirations, on bands such as Sevendust or Ember Falls and Evanescence with a modern and symphonic twist.

Coming to the album, I think there is a great work in creating melodic structures that really makes us enjoy Caterina’s way of singing. In my review, I wrote that the melodic part is the base for most of the album, but other songs have a more aggressive riffing, as to create a sort of contrast between the two. Did you agree to those considerations? There was some other “high level” idea that you wanted to emerge from this work?

Thank you, that´s definitely what we were going for. It´s important for Nass and I to build a characteristic sound and one of the elements of this sound is the contrast you mention, very melodic element in the voice and music, along with heavy, memorable and easy-to-hear riffs. Another element is a very tasteful electronic base. It’s there if you pay attention, but if you don´t, it´s still the perfect base to carry the rest of the music.

Production of this album is really cool, I think it has a great part in making it such a good work. The different instruments and the vocals are well merged and so create the atmosphere that makes it so intense. What considerations do you have on this? Is there an evolution in this part of the album’s work in relation to former CM’s albums?

The production is a big part of the work and it´s mostly done by Nasson with my input. So yes, we wanted this album to sound more intense and deeper than Furyborn, but there is a lot that we love about this previous work that we wanted to keep present in our sound. I would say that the evolution from Furyborn to Emerge lies in the detail of the new arrangements and the element of complexity without getting boring or hard to comprehend.

Creating an album is a complex activity, and I think most of my questions until now were related to Caterina’s and Nasson’s work in it; please, give us some words on the contribution to CM’s music from the other members, Mario, Mistheria and Carlos; and maybe a thought on the collaboration with Elina in “Garden of winter”.

On this occasion, Nasson recorded and created all guitars and bass lines, and for matters of time and availability, the drums were not recorded by Carlos, so Mario and Carlos are our live show line-up. They are amazing people and musicians and I´m very thankful for their will to be part of the band and we’re all looking forward for the upcoming shows (Nightwish, Timo Tolkki and Myrath). As for Mistheria, he contributed once more with us, making arrangements for Garden of Winter. All the other keyboard/programming arrangements in the album were made by Nasson. But Mistheria is much more than a single song contributor. He has been by our side for 3 European tours playing keyboards and we have forged and amazing friendship since he invited me to participate on the first VMP album. Elina made a wonderful job in Garden of Winter, she was very nice and professional and I hope we can eventually release a lyric video of this contribution.

What’s in the future of Chaos Magic? Did you pose some medium or long terms objectives in your minds? What on the road until now, how do you judge it? I know is a personal question, but: would you change something of what you did until now?

Right now, we’re focused on the release of Emerge and everything that entails. Making videos, photoshoots, rehearsing, etc. We have some good local shows coming, we’ll be opening for Nightwish, Timo Tolkki and Myrath this year so it will be a triumphant return to the stages after years of being unable to play live! But the uncertainty remains with the covid situation, we still see shows being cancelled or postponed over it, so I feel it’s still not time to plan another tour abroad, considering the costs that may bring, especially if were flying from Chile. Maybe late 2023-2024 when things are more normal. Would I change something about my career? Absolutely not! I have achieved so much coming from a country that pretty much has nothing to do with this style of music and I’m very proud of my journey. I’m very motivated and I can’t wait to keep on working to make this project grow and hopefully hit festival season in Europe one day.

Thanks for the time spent answering, and for the very nice work of “Emerge”, it is a long way from Chile to Italy but maybe we could hear you live sooner or later. Good luck and I wish the best for all of you.

Thanks so much for having me and for your kindness. We would love to play again in Italy, and we will for sure! Hugs to you and all our readers.

CRASHDIET: live report @ Legend Club Milano 28 Maggio 2022

by Mark Panaia

INTERVISTA: CHIP Z'NUFF
by Roby Comanducci

Potete ascoltare/vedere il singolo-videoclip dell'album cliccando VIDEO

*****************************************************************

Steven Adler viveva a casa mia a Blue Island, IL.

So che conduci un importante programma radiofonico The Monsters of Rock su Dash Radio Network; cosa trasmetti principalmente nella tua programmazione radiofonica?

Oltre 80.000 brani 24 ore su 24, 365 giorni all'anno.

Certamente!

Hi Chip, I can finally interview you! It's a life that I have followed you as a soloist and also Enuff, since the eighties (yeah, I'm over 50 too ... haha). I immediately take this opportunity to congratulate you on your latest solo album which I have also positively reviewed. Tell me how songwriting was born and what do you expect from this album?

Thank you very much, Roby! Songs are like embryos, the beginning of a relationship. These songs are a gift from above. I just started recording as much material as possible, and the record company dictated how they wanted to release it. This could have easily been an Enuff Z’Nuff album.

“Perfectly Imperfet” is a title that intrigues me: what do you want us to understand with this title given to the album? Do you, by chance, feel partially perfect but still imperfect on some factors?

We’re all perfectly imperfect, that’s what makes us special as individuals. I expose all my tattoos and scars on these recordings and I’m not ashamed of it, as I hope others aren’t ashamed of themselves.

What is the main feature of this record? I noticed that the sound is easier, more melodic and captivating than maybe your other solo records or sleaze rock stylistic features of the mother band Enuff Z'Nuff.

I look at the landscape around me and I write songs that’ll show all sides of the story. In this case there’s plenty of subject matter out there to explore.

The line up also includes Adler and Hoekstra, how did the collaboration with them and, obviously, all the remaining members born?

Steven Adler used to live at my house in Blue Island, IL. We recorded this Mott The Hoople cover in my studio ten years ago. It felt right to release this track now for our fans and for Adler and myself who are still brothers in arms. Joel Hoekstra has been a friend of mine for years. I followed him when he played in my friend’s band here in Blue Island. Love him with Cher, Whitesnake, TSO – fabulous musician. Coincidentally just played on my wife Kate Catalina’s record.

Compared to working with Enuff Z'Nuff, how does your approach change in composing and recording your solo album?

I write and record most of my records. It’s nice to have my band members with me because that’s what rock and roll bands do: you get in the same room and you play. Basically, with Enuff Z’Nuff albums I’m able to catch the creativity of each band member on every song, whereas on a solo record I’m doing mostly everything on my own. And I love both scenarios.

You have always been a huge Beatles fan and you hear a lot about your compositions this influence. Tell me what the Beatles represent to you and, if they were still in business, how would their album sound now in 2022?

The Beatles have been the most profound and prolific band in history. They represent the most comprehensive songwriting prose imaginable. If they were still in business I’m sure the four of them would be writing the greatest songs.

You had a great career and you still give us so many emotions now. Which artist have you found yourself best collaborating with in the past? And for what reason?

I’ve always loved collaborating with all my rock heroes. Sitting in a room with Rick Nielsen from Cheap Trick to working alongside Steven Adler from Guns ‘N Roses or even recording in the studio with Neil Schon from Journey. I’ve always pulled inspiration from working with great artists who’ve honed their craft for many, many years. There’s not enough time in a day to find all the artists I’d love to perform with.

I know you host a major The Monsters of Rock radio show on Dash Radio Network; what do you mainly spend in your radio programming? How was your passion for radio born?

My radio show focuses on the greatest hard rock and heavy metal worldwide. It’s basically A through Z of the greatest music alive, and it’s free. 80,000-plus songs 24/7, 365 days of the year. I’ve been following terrestrial radio for 40 years, and that was my inspiration.

A particular question: could you define yourself as an artist and also as a person with the help of a single adjective and tell me why?

Creative. I write plenty of songs and release many records every year. Not only that, I produce other bands as well on my off-time. Perhaps it’s a hobby, but it’s also my work and my lifestyle.

Are you missing the legendary eighties, the period of glam rock and hair metal or are you looking to the future and are you satisfied with how the musical world is going now?

I’ve already lived the 80s and 90s. We had a great time. Wonderful memories that nobody could take away from me. I’m looking forward to the future as a recording artist, but I’ll never be satisfied. That would be a shortcut to thinking.

Well Chip ..... are you planning a tour and maybe some dates in Italy?

I certainly am! Coming to Italy in November with the Glam Slam Metal Tour, it’ll be Enuff Z’Nuff, and The Midnight Devils. I believe there are four dates in your lovely country and I’m looking forward to seeing everybody once again now that the world has opened back up.

Lastly: say something to your Italian fans .....

I love your wine, I love your food, I love your women – one of the greatest countries in Europe and I’m proud to say I get the chance to come play for you every few years. Thank you very much, Roby, and see you at the show!

************************************************************************

Folla enorme.

INTERVIEW: GIRISH AND THE CHRONICLES

by Nikki

Hi guys, here is Nikki from www.cathouse.it. I made a review of your latest album “Hail to the heroes” and I think it is great. First thing that caught my attention is that your music has solid roots in some metal/hard rock classic acts (I think on latest Twisted Sister albums, Skid Row, as well as some metal acts from NWOBHM) yet it does not sound like a mere reprise but an interesting review with a nice energy, powerful lyrics a nice riffs. What would you say on your creative process, did it evolved from the beginning of the band, or it remained the same?

Yes that’s pretty much it. Our music revolves around the classic sound of the ‘80s, style-wise. However, we work really hard and try our best to stay as original as possible when it comes to creating riffs. Even though the songs might remind you of the classics, but most of our music will have end up sounding ‘fresh and new’. We also introduce a lot of unexpected twists and turns on the songs as we don’t like to be monotonous. Yes it is something that has been evolving bit by bit, but with a similar core.

I think the influences on your music are from a wide range of music genre, is it really so? Also, all of you in the band share the same influences or are there some differences?

Yes that’s quite true. We all have the common music we listen to, but at the same time, we also have our own individual choices of musical genres, that is distinctly different from one another and that probably brings in a lot of fresh ideas on the table.

I saw your bass player Yogesh is also your primary music producer. Can you discuss a bit the importance of its work in getting the correct musical feelings from the music that is created?

Yes that has come to be one of the most important factors in the band. With him behind recording, mixing, mastering the opportunities are endless. We can give the songs, the time and attention they deserve. Bringing out a great sound that is distinctly different from most of the bands out there, has helped us a lot in getting more attention. Both I and yogesh are mostly involved in the production, although I’m more into writing and giving ideas. This would have been hard to achieve without him being the main guy behind the sound.

You have some fellow musician collaborating with you for “Rock'n roll fever”. How this cooperation started? Do you have a great personal interaction with other musician; does this influence your music or some part of it?

In 2019, while Chris Adler the was touring India, he did a series of live shows and I got the opportunity to sing for him. Soon, I ended up joining a project he had been working on and was later named Firstborne during the release of our first EP and singles. So I ended up asking him and our guitarist Myrone, if they were interested in being a part of a song which became Rock ‘n Roll fever. The song distinctly has Chris’s signature drumming. Back then, I had also made friends with Rowan Robertson on Facebook. We become friends and been talking about making some music together, which was released under the name ‘Custard Pie’ later on. Since Rowan also had given us a solo in our previous album, the idea of a three way guitar battle between Suraz, Myrone and Rowan seemed like a great idea. Influence wise, not really, although my vocals might have more styles after working with the guys at Firstborne.

Your first album came in 2014, so it is already 8 years you're “in business”, are you satisfied with the achievement you had? What has changed in the music scene for you in this period?

It was been a long journey indeed and although we have been synonymous with the term ‘Hard Rock’, in the country, the last two albums have really stamped our name in the international scene, in a lot of ways. We still think there is a long way to go. It is not easy to break out and start touring everywhere, being a band from India. The change we have observed is that we are finally getting the audience we had always looked for and joining Frontiers has further fuelled it.

Live music has been hit hard by the pandemic in the last two years, yet also had some problems also before in my opinion. Were you able to play live lately? What can be done to help this kind of business and all people that get their work from it?

We played a few shows In 2020. After that it was directly in Switzerland at the UrRock fest, In 2021. We also played a couple of shows recently, which have helped. Being primarily a band that earns from live shows, it was indeed really hard when the pandemic hit us. But I think this shifted some of our focus to stuff like online guitar classes etc. We ended up finding new avenues. I think music education is a great field for any musician to tap into.

Finally, from a musical point of view, I think GATC are a band with a strong need for live performances, thinking to the sheer energy coming from your songs. Did you agree? Can you a live gig you played you would really remember?

Yes the fact that we’ve been performing for a long time, definitely affects the way we write and record. The experience reflects in our songs. We just need to feel the “Bang”, else the song is incomplete haha. I think our first performance UrRock fest in Switzerland was something to remember for a long time. Another Great gig was sharing stage with Poets of the fall in Bangalore, back in 2016. Massive crowd.

Last words: thanks for your nice music, if it will be possible, I will enjoy one of your fore-coming live shows!

Thank you so much, we certainly hope we can see you soon !

INTERVISTA : THE LOYAL CHEATERS

by Roby Comanducci

******************************************************************

Ciao ragazzi è un piacere potervi fare qualche domandina a seguito del vostro nuovo e debut album “Long Run.....All Dead!”.

TOMMY (Tommy Manni – bass, backing vocals ): Beh grazie!

LENA: "Long Run…

MAX: Potrete venire a vederci e fare baldorie :

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

Hi guys, it's a pleasure to be able to ask you some questions following your new and debut album “Long Run ..... All Dead!”. The first is very simple but certainly of interest to Cathouse's readers: tell us a little about your story, you are young but you already have experience. How did you get formed ..... what inspired you and what are your models that you think your sound can have in common?

LENA (McFrison - lead vocals, guitar): The idea for the band came from me and Ricky, the drummer. We've known each other for years, but we've never had the chance to play anything together. One evening we met in front of a couple of beers and after some musical disappointment: the desire to play was certainly not lacking, and not even the determination to do something more than a jam in the rehearsal room. After warming up the engines with some songs already in the drawer, we enlisted Max and Tommy to complete the sound and keep writing. Everyone has their own musicians and bands of reference, but the thing that unites us most in my opinion is the determination and the desire to play together. The influences are different, from 70s rock to pop punk, from glam rock to heavy metal: being also great listeners we have many points of reference in common. Actually these genres have great affinities, many bands of the time influenced each other, so without too many labels I would say that Loyal Cheaters play rock'n'roll (and we like it!)

Talk to me now, instead, about the process of recording / creating this debut album.

RICKY (Richie Raggini - drums): It was tough but we made it. As for the first part of the album, it all started with the exhumation of old pieces written years before which together with Lena were upset and modified to bring out the sound that united us and that we were looking for. With the entry of Max and Tommy new ideas have been transformed into music and have brought that touch that was missing to be what we are now. The recording was an Odyssey, a pandemic and living at a distance did not help by making our plans shift by no means, not to mention the classic problems that are encountered in the studio once the shooting is over ... Fortunately we were able to complete everything respecting the deadline agreed with the record label.

Although, in recent years, the music mainly followed and also proposed by the bands is often brutal / black / death metal and the like, you have embraced the opposite side. A move that may be commercially unattractive but, I think, courageous and above all that reflects a true love for healthy rock that made history. What can you tell me about it?

MAX (Max Colliva - guitar, backing vocals): I didn't know about the popularity of those sub-genres but I think none of us fit into it anyway ... The decision to keep a Rock 'N' Roll base is fundamental for ourselves and for the our goal to build something authentic, bringing together all its facets to appeal to all types of listener with songs that can be sung and danced, without a lack of energy or rough 11-volume electric guitars.

In the review of your album that I recently released I defined you as a mix between Slade / Sweet / T-Rex, Joan Jett, Cheap Trick and, above all, of the modern street rock scene Hellacopters. What do you think?

TOMMY (Tommy Manni - bass, backing vocals): Well thank you! Those you mentioned are all bands from which we take a lot of inspiration, from music to style. In particular bands like the Hellacopters, although more modern, are very important for us because they have marked a very important point for the music that touched us a lot, you can hear in our pieces some ideas, from the power of the drums to the harmonizations on the guitars, so thanks for the comparison!

Answer me one at a time: if you had to define yourself as artists and as a person with the help of a single adjective, which one would you use?

LENA: Directional

RICKY: Impatient

MAX: Dramatic

TOMMY: Meticulous

Going back to talking about “Lon Run ....” at the level of songwriting do you have a particular message or are the songs independent and dealing with different themes from each other?

LENA: "Long Run… All Dead!" it's not just the title of our album and a quote from J.M. Keynes, but above all it is the motto of the Loyal Cheaters: we have to do things (well) now, that if we wait for months, years, decades, life goes fast and maybe we are already underground. The songs contain a bit of this frenetic desire to do, to live in the present and above all individual freedom. At the same time, some reflect the awareness of their own path to face, a kind of epiphany in which the protagonist has already passed the phase of denial and is ready to fight his own demons. The album also contains two covers, the lyrics of which are actually more playful, but we liked the idea of paying homage to Cheap Trick and Slade!

From the bio in my possession it says that you are Italian / German. What do you think of the rock scene in Germany and, consequently, the Italian one?

LENA: I have been living in Germany for almost 4 years and I can say that it depends from region to region. The same is true in Italy, there are regions where there are more underground clubs, small cultural realities that then entice people to listen to music, to make bands and write their own music. In my opinion in Germany there is a little lack of the place where budding bands can start performing and develop their passion. With us with the first band you did the whole coast from north to south, you also asked the ice cream parlor and the sports bar, but they made you play and you had your first live experiences. From private garden parties to rock clubs, it was packed with people who wanted to party and listen to live music! Personally speaking, I found more excitement in Romagna than in Hesse (where I live now).
RICKY: I agree with Lena, luckily Romagna in this respect is a happy land, good or bad always come out on beautiful evenings, people travel for miles to participate and have fun, underlining the fact that in the areas they live in it is a 'utopia. Of course, the neighbor's grass is always greener ... well at least this time we can say that we have something to boast about, maybe not like 10 years ago, but we don't give up

With the "promotion" of the album you have already thrown down live dates, tours .... let us know if we can see you and where?

MAX: You can come and see us and party:

● April 14th at the X-Ray in Forlì

● April 15 at the Taverna della Musica in Montecatini Terme

● April 29th at Il Giardino di Verona

● April 30th at Rock N Roll in Rho

● 13 May at the Caffè degli Artisti in Cesenatico

● May 20th at Joshua Blues in Como

An unusual question: I give you three names and tell me what you think for each of them. Greta Van Fleet, Maneskin and Dirty Honey.

TOMMY: I am of the opinion that a breath of fresh air is always pleasant. I am a fan of Greta Van Fleet, seen live a few years ago, they do a very intimate type of show, long improvisations, very accurate sounds and contact with the public, I am a band in which you can hear the time spent in the rehearsal room at my opinion. It is evident that they are inspired by many bands of the past, but in my opinion it remains pleasant music and made of emotions. The same goes for Dirty Honey, you can feel the influences, but it's nice to see young people on certain stages. Maneskin made a certain kind of choices from the beginning, they embarked on a difficult path with talent but they managed to find the right contacts to do what they do now, in Italy we have never seen a band stand at the top of the world rankings and this is certainly due to the choice on the genre they have taken, between Pop and Rock. For them too, it's nice to see a band (in this case Italian) on stages like Reading & Leeds, Roxy, Loolapalooza, etc ... The nice thing that happens when a new young band emerges with a young following like Maneskin is that it spurs so many young people to start playing and listening to music of that genre there, something that perhaps did not happen before with the Trap phenomenon and similar genres.

Well, thank you and, if you want, can you leave a message to the fans, people or even a "thought" in general?

LENA: We hope to see you at the next lives around Italy - for a dose of rock'n'roll!

INTERVISTA PRAYING MANTIS

by Roby Comanducci

New Wave Of British Heavy Metal.

PRAYING MANTIS  - INTERVIEW

by Roby Comanducci

Hello Chris, it is a pleasure to be able to ask you some questions following the release of the excellent "Katharsis". The first question is simple: tell me about how the album creation procedure was, also considering the period due to the Covid lockdown.

No doubt like many other bands/ artists the Covid period created a totally different working environment . So for this situation we each really worked on our own ideas and gradually shared them on a shared platform . So effectively the album was like a cloud based cake , which gradually got the layers. Because of that there was quite a lot of uncertainly how things would eventually turn out. There is no doubt it was so difficult not being able to be in  the same studio to share the ideas and develop them. So under the circumstances we were extremely pleased how this album came out.

I noticed a further development of the melodic part in your sound, while always remaining on the tracks of heavy rock. Do you agree?

Melody has always been a part of Praying mantis from its early conception. But if its come across from a listeners perspective that we are further developing that trait, then its taken humbly as a big compliment .At the same time we did not want to soften the sound too much so aim to get some aggressiveness in there, so fully agree.

In my opinion the two new members who are in line up from two albums Jaycee and Hans have given further vigor and lymph to your songwriting. What do you think?

It is a record ( excuse the pun?) that this is the third album with the same line up , and naturally we believe maintaining that same line up has developed the song writing and the unity of the sound. We think their addition to mantis has provided a much greater depth on all fronts.

I was very impressed by both the video but above all the music of the single "Cry For The Nations". I feel it is a very deep heartfelt song, do you want to give some particular message with this song?

Children of the earth was I believe the very first set of lyrics that I ever composed when I was about 17. Tino came up with the music , and I think the chorus is still one of the strongest we have ever written. Even then I felt so strong about mans destruction of the planet and used music to put across that message . Here we are in 2022 approaching some 50 years after those lyrics were written and I think everyone would agree, all the messages were already on the wall at the time to all the governing bodies around the world. Of course there was the usual crappy lip service to the masses ,  yet nothing was done, and in fact the destruction of our mother earth has just gathered at an accelerating and alarming pace.  Cry for the Nations is a song on the same lines, another showcase of that same message, though unfortunately  I really think this time  we are past the point of no return. Sop yes there is a lot of emotion in the song.

Technically speaking: how is your song born? First the music then the lyrics, first an idea on which you develop then in the recording room or is it all much more natural?

From my perspective 90% of the time I have the musical idea first and then ai mould the lyrics to fit. Following on the from the point above. Children of the earth was the only song I believe where the lyrics came first .

What is the main feature of this new album? Tell me with an adjective and explain why …

There really isn’t a common feature. The key point is that with the contribution of different writers the end product is a diverse album which most critics and fans have stated.  To me that is a great feature as its so easy for an album to come across as a bit samey throughout. That’s certainly cannot be said for Katharsis

You have been there since 1974, a long career in which you have been part of the New Wave Of British Heavy Meal. What do you remember of that fantastic period?

The NWOBHM era came soon after punk and just seemed like a bit of fresh air to the musical scene. Many people said we didn’t really belong in the NWOBHM because of the musical subtleties , however we cannot complain as it was a vehicle that took us a long way.  I think music back then did have some great fresh edges to it whereas now its all becoming very common place, but maybe that’s because it’s all been done before so all that’s left is just a regurgitation in a slightly different form.

In your opinion, is the approach to music that current bands have completely different from what you had, for example, in the eighties?

The tools that are available now such as recording devices, amplifiers , etc are a completely far cry from when we were developing musically. The writing/ recording platforms such as Logic and Cubase, to name just a couple ,are phenomenal benefit for writing, and certainly makes it easier to put across ideas to the rest of the band, etc . We remember fondly the 24 track 2 inch tape that needed to be cut when a verse in a song was just too long !!..... It took a lot of skill and experience by the studio engineer  to cut the tape in the right place, and we recall a few times where the tape had been joined so many times it  looked as though it had been in an accident? !!!...

Perfect, last you want to say something to your fans in Italy?

If there are any Italian Praying Mantis fans who are as old as Tino and me, you are doing well ?….. immense thank you for your support for all these fabulous years that we have had the privilege to play to you. To the newcomers , welcome dear fans and hope we can carry on going for another 50 years ? !

E poi in cosa devo credere ?

Roby Comanducci

------------------

Thinking of living long enough to be able to savor the thousand scents of life, see the millions of colors of our land .... this is perhaps what most troubles my thoughts. Deep down inside me, I sometimes think and reflect on the fact that we are not eternal. We live to ... live and survive: how many things do we lose in our carnal persistence in this world? We waste time on many things that may not deserve to be considered, but we must. We must and we are aware that this DUTY is not a natural obligation but structurally imposed by something that dominates us and allows us to breathe life. We breathe the reflection of our existence since we are not absolutely free. We are not masters of ourselves as we think we are, as - perhaps or most likely - they try to make us believe. The creed is a profound thing but without an ideal of the bottom it is sand that vanishes with a breath.
I hope to live long enough and to savor as much as possible the things that I can and ALLOW ME to savor. Well yes: sometimes I want to be free, my "rebellious" self inside is unleashed and I could do anything, anger (which is basically the basic characteristic of my character) is in constant ferment and the adrenaline is calmed only by a correct education towards non-violence received by my parents.
Sometimes I think I should act on instinct .... one day maybe I will, but I am sure that I will not be able to release certain intrinsic sensations, my mind is twisted because I no longer believe in the next. I know ... the church, the people, the right-thinking neighbor or false believers preach and wave these words to the world: believe in your neighbor. But is there a neighbor of yours to believe in? And what do I have to believe in? Who is he? It is certainly not God or someone whose presence can redeem my existence or accompany me on my long journey of life. I don't believe in others, but I try to give my trust, yes.
Too bad that we are all like small islands scattered and not connected around an imposing archipelago .... an archipelago of which we are aware of the existence but of which we know nothing.
Again, I hope to be able to enjoy something of this life. What is certain is that the most unlikely events happen and we are only in the presence of someone who decides on our life. In this regard I often say: live and breathe every moment of your life as the last moment, the most beautiful, the most charged, the most intense.

Do not miss anything, otherwise you have lost it forever. The love you have for something, someone, if it is true and sincere, keep it close and keep it as the most precious possession. That will never leave you.

Roby Comanducci

Ciao a tutti voi. E a casa? Tutto a posto? Tutto in ordine? (sempre l’uomo..).

Eravate piccoli e bisognosi d’amore.

Potevate regalare tanto affetto chiedendo nulla in cambio, forse qualche scatoletta o croccantino.
