Abbiamo cercato di intervistare la female singer della new sensation April Art, Lisa, ma purtroppo c'è stato un problema e alle nostre risposte ha dato forma il chitarrista Chris Bunnel

Nel vostro album mescolate molto bene l'elettronica con le chitarre metal vecchio stile, pensi che evolverete il vostro sound futuro in una delle due direzioni?

Dipende da come ci sentiamo mentre scriviamo la nostra musica. Usare l’elettronica è come condire il pasto. A volte avrai bisogno di un po’ più o un po’ meno “pepe”. Per quanto riguarda la chitarra, non pensiamo che sia heavy metal vecchio stile. Per noi è più un tipo moderno di "riff djenty" con accordatura bassa. ;D

Collegandomi alla domanda precedente, pensi che il progetto iniziale, musicalmente, sia cambiato rispetto a come siete oggi? Se sì, per quale motivo?

Sì. Il nostro primo album “Rise & Fall” è un album rock ed è molto più morbido di quanto suoniamo adesso. Non abbiamo quasi avuto reazioni all'album. Sapevamo che dovevamo cambiare molto e diventare molto più creativi. Durante la crisi 2020 abbiamo lavorato sull'immagine e sul suono della nostra band. Volevamo suonare più pesanti e interessanti, quindi abbiamo abbassato l'accordatura delle chitarre e siamo diventati più creativi con l'elettronica. Band come Wage War, I Prevail e Falling in Reverse ci hanno ispirato molto.

In molte canzoni si sentono molti passaggi con chitarre metal molto riconoscibili in gruppi come System of a down o Korn, ci sono gruppi che vi hanno influenzato in queste direzioni? O forse altri per altri motivi?

I Korn e molte altre band, come ho menzionato nella domanda precedente, sono ovviamente una grande ispirazione per il suono e i riff di chitarra metal.

Avete mai scartato qualche canzone per un album? Se sì, vi siete pentiti della scelta? Utilizzerete quel materiale per produzioni future?

Questa è buona. Scartiamo sempre il materiale, quando scriviamo. Siamo abituati a iniziare a scrivere molte battute con una semplice progressione di accordi. Scegliamo il meglio per scrivere un'intera canzone. Alla fine cerchiamo tutti di trovare le migliori canzoni per l'album. Ma noi ricicliamo anche molte delle nostre idee. Abbiamo ancora due titoli di lavoro provenienti dalle sessioni di scrittura di "Rodeo", su cui continueremo a lavorare e che speriamo di utilizzare per le future uscite dei singoli.

Nei live e nei video siete sempre vestiti rigorosamente di rosso, la divisa è un forte segno distintivo che caratterizza molto, perché la scelta del rosso acceso? Ha un significato particolare?

Tutto è iniziato durante la crisi. Abbiamo scritto la canzone “Break the Silence” e girato un video musicale in un’arena vuota in collaborazione con #alarmstuferot (Red Alert). Dopo aver pubblicato il video, con noi vestiti di rosso abbiamo pensato che fosse una grande idea far emergere la scena metal "malvagia" vestita di nero e attenerci al codice di abbigliamento.

Nel 2024 pensi che le case discografiche possano ancora essere un trampolino di lancio per i grandi palchi o per realizzare il tuo materiale devi essere completamente indipendente? Siete disposti ad accettare compromessi? Anche solo lievi cambiamenti? Oppure radicali anche a costo di suonare nei pub?

Penso che sia molto importante avere i partner giusti al momento giusto. E penso che sia ancora più importante che tutti nel team siano entusiasti del progetto. Se è così, una casa discografica può essere un trampolino di lancio per palchi più grandi, perché aiuta a rendere le cose possibili. Non c’era stata una situazione in cui dovevamo scendere a compromessi. Siamo davvero grati di avere Reaper con noi a bordo.

Pensando alla band tra 10 anni, dove ti piacerebbe essere?

Vogliamo suonare in grandi arene ed essere gli headliner del Wacken Open Air Festival, suonare in tutto il mondo e passare più tempo possibile suonando e creando musica.

Quale band vorresti supportare?

Mi piacerebbe supportare Papa Roach o Limp Bizkit.

Ci sono paesi in cui ti piacerebbe assolutamente suonare? Oppure ci sono stati posti che ti hanno colpito particolarmente per il calore del pubblico, o addirittura il contrario: dove ti aspettavi più hype?

Personalmente mi piacerebbe fare un tour in Giappone. "April Art live at budokan" è nella mia lista dei desideri.

Considerato il nuovo cantante dei Linkin Park, cosa ne pensi del cambio di direzione verso una voce femminile? E in generale le voci femminili nel metal aumentano sempre di più, è segno di maggiore uguaglianza o semplicemente negli ultimi anni sempre più donne si avvicinano al metal?

Penso che sia una scelta eccellente. Emily Amrstrong sta facendo un ottimo lavoro e si adatta molto bene! Penso anche che sia fantastico, perché non puoi davvero paragonare una voce femminile al leggendario canto di Chester. Oltre a ciò, mi piacciono molto i gruppi rock e metal con una cantante femminile.

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

In your album you mix electronics with old-style metal guitars very well, do you think you will evolve your future sound in one of the two directions?

It depends on how we feel during writing our music. Using electronics is like seasoning the meal. Sometimes you’ll need a little more or a little less “pepper”.  Guitar wise we don’t think it’s old-style heavy metal. For us it’s more a modern kind of low -tuned djenty riffing. ;D

Connecting to the previous question, do you think that the initial project, musically, has changed compared to how you are today? If so, for what reason?

Yes. Our first album “Rise & Fall” is a rock album and way softer than we sound now. We almost had no reactions to the album. We knew we had to change a lot and get way more creative. During the crisis 2020 we worked on our band image and sound. We wanted to sound heavier and more interesting, so we tuned the guitars down and also got more creative with electronics. Bands like Wage War, I Prevail and Falling in Reverse inspired us a lot.  

In many songs you can hear many passages with metal guitars very recognizable in groups like system of a down or Korn, are there groups that have influenced you in these directions? Or maybe others for other reasons?

Korn and many other Bands, like I mentioned in the previous question are of course a big inspiration for the sound and metal guitar riffs.

Have you ever discarded any songs for an album? If so, have you regretted the choice? Will you use that material for future productions?

That’s a good one. We always discard material, when we write. We are used to start writing a lot of hook-lines with a simple chord progression. We pick the best for writing a whole song. At the end we all try to find the best songs for the album. But we also recycle a lot of our ideas. We still have two work titles from the writing sessions of Rodeo, that we will keep working on and hopefully use for future single releases.  

In live and videos you are always strictly dressed in red, the uniform is a strong distinctive sign that characterizes a lot, why the choice of bright red? Does it have a particular meaning?

It all started during the crisis. We wrote the song “Break the silence” and filmed a music video in an empty arena in cooperation with #alarmstuferot (Red Alert). After releasing the video, with us dressed in red we thought it’s a great idea to pop out the black dressed “evil” metal scene and stick to the dress-code.

In 2024 do you think that record companies can still be a springboard for the big stages or to make your own material you have to be completely independent? Are you willing to accept compromises? Even just slight changes? Or radical ones even at the cost of playing in pubs?

I think it’s very important to have the right partners to the right time. And I think it’s even more important, that everybody in the team is hyped about the project. If that’s the case a record company can be springboard for bigger stages, because they help making things possible. We didn’t have the situation, where we had to make any compromises, yet. We are really grateful to have Reaper with us on board.

Thinking about the band in 10 years, where would you like to be?

We want to play big arenas and headline the wacken open air festival, play all over the world and spend as much time as possible playing and creating music.

Which band would you like to support?

I would love to support Papa Roach or Limp Bizkit.

Are there countries where you would absolutely like to play? Or were there places that particularly impressed you for the warmth of the audience, or even the opposite: where did you expect more hype?
I personally would love to tour in Japan. “April Art live at budokan” is on my bucket list. I also want to be back on the 70.000 tons of metal. That was a fantastic experience!

Given the new singer of Linkin Park, what do you think about the change of direction towards a female voice? And in general, female voices in metal are increasing more and more, is it a sign of greater equality or simply in recent years more women approaching metal?

I think it’s an excellent choice.  Emily Amrstrong is doing a great job and fits very well! I also think it’s great, because you can’t really compare a female voice to Chester's legendary singing. Beside that, I really enjoy female fronted rock and metal bands.
