Molto interessante questo nuovo lavoro dei Landfall, formazione Brasiliana giunta al suo secondo album. La band nasce come evoluzione di una precedente formazione nota come Wild Child, che ha avuto un discreto successo in patria, per l’incontro col singer Gui Olivier, ex Auras, che ha portato le idee per il progetto musicale di cui stiamo parlando. La band propone un AOR con forti influssi di Hard 80s, molto orientato alla melodia e alle trame accattivanti, seppur con digressioni heavy e a tratti più particolari, quasi prog (penso a “Rescue me”); una costruzione delle song che permette di sfruttare quello che a mio parere è il tratto forte del combo, ovvero la dote vocale del già menzionato singer, potente, espressivo, ed estremamente caratterizzante per il genere proposto. Certo, si tratta comunque di un tributo a melodie che diversi di noi conoscono da anni, ma non va sminuito il buon lavoro fatto a livello compositivo, stilistico e di arrangiamento per ottenere le tracce che abbiamo per le mani. Da un lato si nota una composizione solida e non banale, in grado di oscillare tra il molto emozionale e il più ritmato/cadenzato (“Elevate”) senza annoiare e senza proporre passaggi a vuoto o riempitivi; dall’altro come già ricordato lo sfruttamento delle linee vocali per dare pienezza e significato alle canzoni è ben riuscito. In assoluto infatti, le linee vocali risultano quelle che danno il feedback più positivo all’ascolto e che più rimangono impresse; ad esse si accompagnano comunque delle linee strumentali tecnicamente ineccepibili, che completano perfettamente il quadro. A livello produttivo io do comunque un buon giudizio del lavoro della band, nonostante alcune sbavature siano presenti, perché il lavoro è autoprodotto; in tal senso la qualità non è cristallina ma si può apprezzare il tentativo di personalizzare il suono facendolo collimare col genere proposto. Come concludere? Direi che è un buon lavoro che sorprende per la qualità e la capacità di variare nelle tracce, con varie piccole variazioni nelle influenze a rendere il lavoro non monotono; gli appassionati del genere troveranno diverse chicche nella tracklist che rendono questo disco decisamente consigliabile. Oggi è uscito un nuovo singolo e video, "Firestarter". In "Hold Your Ground", Dennis si occupa di voce solista, basso e tastiere ed è affiancato dal chitarrista Michael Klein, dal tastierista Eric Ragno e dal batterista MIchael Kolar, con Pete Newdeck che contribuisce ai cori. Come ci si poteva aspettare con Khymera e Dennis, "Hold Your Ground" è un'altra bella fetta di rock melodico di alto pedigree.

Ed eccolo qua il colorito, pimpante “vecchietto” e co-leader degli Enuff, Mr. Chip Z'nuff, che ci regala un nuovo full lenght album della band madre dopo le ultime prove in studio quali il discreto “Brainwashed Generation”, album recensito e uscito nel 2021 di buona fattura ma decisamente easy listening e troppo pop, “Hardrock Nite” album di cover tratte dal repertorio dei Beatles uscito un anno fa, e il penultimo sforzo uscito la scorsa primavera, il solista di Chip “Perfectly Imperfect”, disco interessante ma -anche in questo caso- esageratamente soft. Avrete avuto sicuramente modo di leggere la mia intervista qui sul nostro sito (andate a leggerla nell'apposita sezione interview.....in caso non l'abbiate ancora fatto, nda) nella quale Chip era una autentica fucina di idee e di positività e, infatti, tale feeling positivo è stato immagazzinato dentro questo “Finer Than Sin”. Il nostro si è attorniato di ottimi musicisti e amici di vecchia data (già presenti nell'album “Brainwashed Generation”, nda) coi quali ha partorito questa manciata di song -sempre- dal sapore retrò Beatlesiano e la marcata vena pop ma, a differenza degli ultimi lavori in studio, leggermente più incline ad arrangiamenti rockeggianti, più “hard” se proprio vogliamo usare quella parola. Interessante l'intro di oltre due minuti a opera dei guitar man Tory Stoffregen e Tony Fennell che poi si ricollega in una reprise anch'essa di circa un minuto e mezzo nel finale del disco. La cosa che mi è piaciuta di questo nuovo lavoro è – a tratti- la verve più sleaze'n'roll che trasuda in brani quali l'accattivante e ruffiana “Lost And Out Of Control” e “Temporarily Disconnected” o il glam rock settantiano di “Trampoline”. Da notare la presenza della cover “God Save The Queen”, nulla di particolare ma egregiamente suonata e riproposta. Le influenze dei Baronetti -non dimenticatevelo- si fanno sempre sentire ma questo, per chi ha amato questa band dagli inizi, sicuramente non può essere che un punto a loro favore. A dispetto del penultimo studio album “Brainwashed Generation” questo “Finer Than Sin” forse è più in grado di ammaliare anche nuovi fans e farli avvicinare al sound della band di Blue Island, Illinois.

INTERVISTA:  MICHAEL SWEET - STRYPER

Abbiamo raggiunto il bravo Michael Sweet, fondatore dei Cristiani Stryper, autentica leggenda del Christian Metal mondiale e reduci da un folgorante e sempre più heavy album in studio....

La prima domanda è semplice; come ci si sente dopo quasi 40 anni di onorata carriera a uscire ora, nel 2022, con un album nuovo di zecca? Il titolo cita "The Final Battle" .... ma spero che non sia la vostra “battaglia finale”!!!

È fantastico. Sono sempre sbalordito dal fatto che siamo ancora qui a fare ciò che amiamo fare quasi 40 anni dopo. È un vero miracolo. Sono un uomo benedetto e grato e amo ogni minuto della mia vita, sono onorato di poterlo fare ancora.

Mi racconti un po' come è andata la fase di produzione di questo disco, visto il periodo che tutti abbiamo passato con il Covid?

Questo album è stato realizzato mentre stavo subendo un intervento chirurgico per i miei occhi. Ho avuto una retina distaccata ed è successo due volte. Quindi è stato molto difficile superare quel momento e poi dover scrivere l'album e poi registrarlo. Volevo rispettare i tempi e non riprogrammare la realizzazione dell'album, quindi ci siamo impegnati e anche se è stata dura, siamo stati in grado di farlo. Sono così felice di averlo finito!

Dopo aver ascoltato "The Final ...." lo trovo un ottimo album e suona davvero pesante. Forse anche più difficile del penultimo album. Sei d'accordo? Hai deliberatamente indurito il suono?

Penso che stiamo diventando più pesanti man mano che invecchiamo. Di solito è l'opposto per la maggior parte delle band. Con l'età diventano più morbidi, gli Stryper -al contrario- diventano più pesanti. Sarà anche perché sovente ascolto di più il vecchio materiale e vorrei tornare alle nostre radici. Voglio dare ai fan quello che vogliono ed è importante incorporare il nostro heavy sound nella musica. Non voglio “reinventare la ruota” e sperimentare così tanto da perdere il contatto con la nostra base allontanandoci dai nostri fan. Non è giusto.

Quindi qual è, secondo te, il miglior pregio di questo nuovo album?

Personalmente credo che questo sia il nostro miglior album fino ad oggi. So che molti fan discuterebbero con me su questo, ma è quello che credo. Sono molto contento di come è andata a finire e penso che stiamo migliorando man mano che andiamo avanti. Credo che il nostro meglio debba ancora venire. La prossima volta non vedo l'ora di fare un album ancora migliore di questo!

Sappiamo tutti che siete la band Christian Rock più importante del pianeta. I testi delle tue canzoni hanno sempre affrontato questioni religiose...puoi spiegarmi la magia di come sei riuscito in molti anni a mescolare testi positivisti e cristiani con musica puramente metal? Sicuramente un pregio e un grande valore!

L'abbiamo appena fatto, quanto hai detto lo puoi riscontrare su questo disco. Pensa che nel lontano 1983 mi ero sentito quasi obbligato di cambiare i testi e iniziai quindi a riscriverli. Stavamo vivendo di droghe, sesso e rock 'n' roll come ogni altra band di quel periodo ma poi ho iniziato a scrivere di Dio e cantare di Dio. Il resto è storia. Molte persone sembrano pensare che sia un espediente, ma non è un espediente. Non sceglieremmo mai di cantare qualcosa che non è popolare se volessimo fare soldi. Quindi questa è un'idea sciocca e un pensiero sciocco. Siamo tutti profondi uomini di fede ed esprimiamo la nostra fede e i nostri valori attraverso la nostra musica. Non è stata certamente una “mossa commerciale” scrivere testi Cristiani!

Secondo te Michael, un ragazzo, un adolescente di oggi, riesce a cogliere il tuo messaggio dai testi o si concentra maggiormente sul suono?

Penso che la maggior parte delle persone si concentri maggiormente sul suono. Almeno all'inizio. Poi, una volta che ascoltano la canzone e la musica, si immergono nei testi e può capitare che non riescono a “digerirli” o capire cosa stiamo dicendo. La nostra speranza è sempre di commuovere qualcuno con i nostri testi, col nostro messaggio e credo che alla fine ce la faremo.

È cambiato qualcosa nel tuo modo di comporre dopo tanti anni? Come nasce una canzone degli Stryper?

Una volta mi ci volevano mesi per scrivere una canzone ma non mi mancano affatto quei giorni. Adesso potrei scrivere una canzone al giorno e quindi, se ci sono 11 canzoni, mi ci vogliono 11 giorni. Una canzone al giorno. Mi piace guidare sotto pressione e mi piace guidare velocemente, questa potrebbe essere una metafora del mio attuale songwriting, non penso che uno debba passare giorni o mesi per scrivere una canzone se questa gli viene dal cuore nell'anima.

Un altro tuo grande vantaggio è il mantenimento stabile della formazione originale fatta eccezione per il ruolo di bassista. Pensi che questo abbia contribuito positivamente al tuo successo?

Assolutamente. È importante avere la maggior parte, se non tutta la formazione originale. Abbiamo tre su quattro della formazione originale e abbiamo inserito Perry Richardson che suonava con i FireHouse, sentivo che era perfetto musicalmente e spiritualmente. È una grande persona, un grande musicista e un grande cantante.

Se ti chiedessi di trovare una somiglianza tra "The Final Battle" e uno dei tuoi dischi del passato... quale sceglieresti?

Penso che sia una combinazione di mini album. Sento frammenti di “Soldiers Under Command” e “To Hell With The Devil”. Sento anche frammenti di “In God We Trust” e persino “The Yellow and Black Attack” all'interno di questo album (beh praticamente i migliori album della band, nda!). Ma sento anche sapori moderni, un mix di cose direi.

Devo congratularmi con te: sei sempre stato un ottimo vocalist e anche in questo album dimostri che il tempo non ha minimamente intaccato la tua voce. Qual è il tuo segreto?

Non ho un vero e proprio segreto. Cerco di prendermi cura di me stesso, di riscaldarmi prima di cantare e di prendermi cura della mia voce nel mio corpo. Ma non ho una lunga lista di segreti per mantenere intatta la mia voce. Scelgo le mie battaglie e anche se la mia voce è cambiata un po' nel corso degli anni, so cosa posso fare e so quali sono i miei limiti. Non cerco di allargare i miei confini o di abusare della mia voce

Una domanda particolare: come ti descriveresti come artista e come persona con l'aiuto di un solo aggettivo? E perché?

Onesto. Per me è importante essere onesto come musicista, come artista e come persona. Voglio sempre dire la verità ed essere un libro aperto. Questo significa per me più di ogni altra cosa.

Voi come band siete nati nel decennio dell'hair metal, del glamour e del class metal: cosa ne pensate dell'evoluzione che il music business e le mode hanno avuto negli ultimi anni? Sei contento di come sta andando o cambieresti qualcosa?

Eravamo decisamente nel posto giusto al momento giusto. Siamo cresciuti a Hollywood tra la fine degli anni '70 e l'inizio degli anni '80, quando ci fu un'esplosione di hard rock e metal. Eravamo proprio lì a viverla, a vederla e ad assaporarla. È stato un miracolo per noi essere in quel posto in quel momento. Sono molto grato per questo e penso che sia valso per il futuro, credo che per merito di quegli anni siamo ancora qui oggi.

Mi hai detto del tuo problema agli occhi. Insomma, è stato un periodo pesante; tuttavia, sembra che tu ne sia uscito nel migliore dei modi e tu l'abbia superato. Come stai ora. Fisicamente ed emotivamente?

Sto molto meglio ora. È stata una battaglia molto dura da superare per realizzare questo album in quel periodo ma sono andato avanti e ho insistito per farlo. Sono felice di averlo fatto e la mia vista sta migliorando lentamente ma inesorabilmente, ho ancora cure da fare, ma sono grato di poter vedere bene.

Ultima domanda: quando verrai in Italia per un tour???

Che ci crediate o no, ci stiamo lavorando nella speranza che si riesca l'anno prossimo. Se non riusciremo sicuramente nei prossimi anni faremo in Italia. Ci mancano tanto i nostri fans italiani e ci dispiacerebbe non poterci ancora venire. Ma conta che questo arriverà presto. Che Dio benedica tutti.

The first question is simple; how does it feel after almost 40 years of honored career to come out now, in 2022, with a brand new album? The title mentions "The Final Battle" .... but he hoped it is not your final battle !!!

It feels amazing. I’m always blown away at the fact that we are still here doing what we love to do almost 40 years later. It’s a true miracle. I am a blessed and thankful man and I love every minute of it and I am honored to be able to do it still.

Can you tell me a bit how the production phase of this record went, given the period we all went through with Covid?

This album was made while I was undergoing surgery for my eyes. I had a detached retina and it happened twice. So it was very difficult getting through that procedure and then having to write the album and then record the album. I wanted to stay on schedule and not reschedule the making of the album so we follow through with everything and Even though it was tough, we were able to do so. I’m so happy we did.

After listening to "The Final ...." I find it a great album and it sounds really heavy. Maybe even harder than the penultimate album. Do you agree? Have you deliberately hardened the sound?

I think we are getting heavier as we get older. Usually it is the opposite for most bands. As they age they get softer. Striper gets heavier. I listen more to the old Stryper material and want to achieve getting back to our roots. I want to give the fans what they want and it’s important to incorporate our Heaviside in the music. I don’t want to reinvent the wheel and experiment so much so that we lose touch with our base and alienate ourselves from our Fanbase. That is not good.

So what is, in your opinion, the best value of this new album?

I personally believe that this is our best album to date. I know many fans would argue with me on that but that is what I believe. I’m very happy with how it turned out and I think we are getting better as we go along. I believe that our best is yet to come. I look forward to making an even better album next time around.

We all know that you are the most important Christian Rock band on the planet. The lyrics of your songs have always dealt with religious issues; Can you explain to me the magic of how you have managed over many years to mix positivist and Cristian lyrics with purely metal music? Definitely a merit and a great value!

We just did it. Back in 1983 I felt convicted to change the lyrics and I just started rewriting the lyrics. We were seeing about sex drugs and rock ‘n’ roll like every other band and then I started writing about God and singing about God. The rest is history as they say. A lot of people seem to think that it’s a gimmick but it’s not a gimmick. We would never choose to sing about something that is not popular if we wanted to make money. So that is a silly idea and a silly thought. We are deep man of faith and we express our faith and our values through our music.

In your opinion Michael, a boy, a teenager of now, can he get your message from the lyrics or does he focus more on the sound?

I think most people focus more on the sound. At least at first. Then once they listen to the song and the music they dive into the lyrics and can’t digest the lyrics and understand what they’re saying. Our hope is always to move someone with the lyrics in our message. I think eventually we do.

Has anything changed in your way of composing after so many years? How is a Stryper song born?

Are used to spend more time writing songs. Sometimes it would take me months to write a song. I don’t miss those days at all. Now I read a song a day for all the new albums. So if there’s 11 songs it takes me 11 days. One song per day. I enjoy riding under pressure and I enjoy riding quickly. I don’t think you need to spend days or months writing a song if it’s coming from the heart in the soul.

Another big advantage of yours is the stable maintenance of the original line up except for the role of bassist. Do you think this has contributed positively to your success?

Absolutely. It’s important to have most if not all of the original lineup. I know it is to the fence. We have three out of four of the original lineup. And we brought in Perry Richardson who used to perform play for fire house. So I feel that he is a perfect fit musically and spiritually. He’s a great person and a great player and a great singer.

If I asked you to "approach" and find a similarity between "The Final Battle" and one of your records from the past ... which one would you choose?

I think it is a combination of mini albums. I hear bits and pieces of Soldiers Under Command as well as To Hell with the Devil. I also hear bits and pieces of In God We Trust and even the yellow and black attack within this album. But I also hear modern flavors and twist along the way as well.

I have to congratulate you: you have always been an excellent vocalist and also in this album you show that time hasn't affected your voice in the slightest. What is your secret?

I don’t really have a secret per se. I try to take care of myself and warm up before I sing and take care of my voice in my body. But I don’t have a long list of secrets to maintain my voice. I choose my battles and although my voice has changed a little bit over the years, I know what I can do and I know what my limitations are. I don’t try to over stretch my boundaries or abuse my voice.

A particular question: how would you describe yourself as an artist and as a person with the help of a single adjective? And why?

Honest. It’s important for me to be honest as a musician, as an artist and as a person. I always want to tell the truth and be an open book. That means more to me than anything. I want people to get the real deal and nothing less.

You as a band were born in the decade of hair metal, glamor and class metal: what do you think of the evolution that the music business and fashions have had in recent years? Are you happy with how it is going or would you change something?

We were definitely in the right place at the right time. We grew up in Hollywood in the late 70s and early 80s when there was an explosion of hard rock and metal. We were right there living it and seeing it and tasting it. It was pretty miraculous for us to be in that place at that time. I’m very thankful for that and I think that’s a big part of why we are still here today.

I learned about Oz's health problems and also about your retinal eye problem. In short, it was a heavy period; however, it seems you have come out in the best way to overcome it. How are you now. Physically and emotionally?

I am doing much better now. It was a very tough battle to overcome to make this album during that time. But I pushed through and I insisted on doing so I’m not rescheduling. I’m so happy that I did. My vision is getting better slowly but surely and I have still more healing to do but I am thankful that I can even see right now.

Last question: when will you come to Italy for a tour ???

Believe it or not we are working on this in our hopes are to come next year. If that doesn’t work out, we will certainly put together a tour very soon in the next few years and come to Italy. We miss our Italian vans in love him so much and it breaks your heart to not be able to come yet. But count on this coming soon. May God bless everyone.

L’acclamato singer Johnny Gioeli (Hardline, Axel Rudi Pell, e una carriera solista di tutto rispetto) torna cercando una proposta musicale innovativa per i suoi trascorsi, ma non per le sue radici musicali: unire Hard d’oltreoceano alla scuola metal europea. Questa l’idea alla base di “History’s hand”, l’album del combo messo in piedi per realizzare questa sua intenzione, di cui senza altri fronzoli vado a discutere l’aspetto musicale nei dettagli. La mia impressione è che la voce aspra ma estremamente espressiva di Johnny si adatti davvero bene allo stile impostato, e il risultato diviene molto in fretta davvero piacevole da ascoltare. Io direi che siamo di fronte in realtà un metal epico e pomposo ma non pacchiano, dove risaltano numero fraseggi alla 6 corde e un riffing molto strutturato (questo sì da hard 80s di buona fattura) che non stona e anzi da molto spessore e potenza alle song. Su questa struttura, coniugata in una manciata di pezzi a mio avviso molto ben congegnati, che vanno dalla possente cavalcata della opener “Here we are” alla marcia epica di “The chase”, con varie apprezzabili sfumature, si staglia lo stile vocale del singer statunitense, enfatico ma che non perde mai di espressività, possente e al tempo stesso emozionale. Insomma trovo che questo disco faccia un’ottima impressione, lo ascolto volentieri ben oltre la minima dose necessaria per scrivere queste righe, e lo consiglio vivamente. Il lavoro di produzione rende giustizia a un suono che deve comunque di partenza essere aggressivo e rude, quindi non è cristallino ma ottiene la giusta ruvidezza necessaria per non togliere carica alle song. La tecnica dei musicisti non è mai sopra le righe, si nota comunque a mio avviso molto bene il lavoro dietro le pelli di Fabio Alessandrini, che dà molto nel rendere, anche lui, la parte di aggressività ed epica delle canzoni. Concludo senza dilungarmi inutilmente oltre che ritengo questo disco un ascolto molto azzeccato per tutti gli appassionati, e decisamente un lavoro che mi fa desiderare decisamente l’ascolto live di questa band. Buon ascolto!

Era il lontano 1984 quando un ellepì dal titolo “The Yellow and Black Attack” fece capolino nel music world, scaturito dalle fervide menti dei fratelli Michael e Robert Sweet, di Orange County – California. La band era già formata dal 1982 e con quel disco decretarono il loro start che li ha portati ad essere i Re del Christian Metal mondiale. Eh si....e soprattutto fa godere vedere questi signori che 37 anni dopo sono ancora in auge, belli e vivaci e soprattutto non a corto d'idee anzi, capaci ancora di sfornare canzoni doc e album di elevato livello tecnico-qualitativo come il qui presente “The Final Battle”. Tra l'altro, a differenza di esimii colleghi di genere musicale ed età, Michael Sweet e compagni non hanno cercato di ammorbidire il sound, di puntare ad un suono più commerciale, più radiofonico e mainstream....no no tutt'altro, “The Final Battle” si candida come uno dei dischi più pesanti partoriti da “casa Stryper”!! Merito di una innata vena compositiva, di un ensamble che - fatta eccezione del bass player- è consolidato con la medesima line up degli esordi, di un vocalist che non sente affatto il passare degli anni e utilizza le sue corde vocali come a vent'anni e un guitar work quanto mai tagliente che cesella riff assassini in puro heavy metal style. Alla faccia di chi dice che il rock Cristiano e molle; qui si parte con “Transgressor” un velocissimo up tempo e il disco si attesta su un “tiro” potente e aggressivo. Lo potete ascoltare con gioia nella cavalcata anthemica “Rise to The Call”, nella dirompente “Ashes To Ashes”, nelle cadenzate e rocciose “See No Evil” e “No Rest For Wicked” insomma, non c'è pace per le vostre anime (e parlando di Stryper è quasi un controsenso...hehe) e, attenzione attenzione, non c'è una ballad! No. L'unico brano leggermente più incline alla melodia e più lento come arrangiamento è “Near” che, però, non è da considerarsi una ballad bensì un'ottima rock song con carattere e arrangiamento sopraffini. Se volete un disco che vi scuoti per bene “The Final Battle” è fatto apposta per voi!

Merit of an innate compositional vein, of an ensemble that - with the exception of the bass player - is consolidated with the same line up of the beginning, of a vocalist who does not feel the passing of the years at all and uses his vocal cords as in twenty years and a very sharp guitar work that chisels killer riffs in pure heavy metal style. In the face of those who say that Christian rock is soft; here we start with “Transgressor” a very fast up tempo and the disc settles on a powerful and aggressive “shot”. You can hear it with joy in the anthemic ride "Rise to The Call", in the disruptive "Ashes To Ashes", in the rhythmic and rocky "See No Evil" and "No Rest For Wicked" in short, there is no peace for your souls (and speaking of Stryper it is almost a contradiction ... hehe) and, beware, there is no ballad! No. The only song slightly more inclined to melody and slower as an arrangement is “Near” which, however, is not to be considered a ballad but an excellent rock song with superfine character and arrangement. If you want a record that really shakes you, “The Final Battle” is made for you!
