INTERVISTA A SERAFINO PERUGINO CEO-FONDATORE FRONTIERS MUSIC SRL

intervista by: Roby Comanducci

Rock on!

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

First of all Serafino, you are a big fan of melodic rock: tell me a little about your story as a teenager, the first stirrings of rock, what made you 'click', what made you 'burn', get closer to this music and then (of course) how did you come up with the idea of founding the label Frontiers?

Since I was young, I have been a great enthusiast of melodic rock and AOR. My dream was to work in the music industry, and I started importing and distributing CDs as a part-time activity. In 1996, I decided to found Frontiers to give a home to this music that I loved. The choice of the name is inspired by Journey's 1983 album, symbolizing a sound that I wanted to represent.

If I'm not mistaken, Frontiers was born in 1996 (correct me if I'm wrong). Certainly a big gamble, in a time when grunge and alternative rock were rampant. Yet you steadfastly pursued your path. Where did you find such willpower?

Yes, it was a difficult time, with grunge dominating the music scene. However, I firmly believed in the value of melodic rock and pursued my passion with determination. The willpower came from the conviction that there was still an audience for this musical genre, and I believe that the fact that we are still here after almost thirty years proves that I was not wrong.

If memory serves me well, you started with the first release by Frontiers of a record by the legendary Ten. Right?

What was the reasoning behind that choice which, obviously, should have been fundamental, a 'business card' for the newly established label? The choice of Ten as the first album released by Frontiers was certainly strategic. I wanted to start with a band that best represented our style and that already had a solid fan base. The Ten were at their peak at the time and with their distinctive sound, they were the ideal choice to launch our label.

Needless to say, Frontiers Records, now known as Frontiers Music Srl, is a true global reference point for all lovers of melodic rock and classic rock. I know that Frontiers has developed to the point of having distributions in the United States, Canada, New Zealand, etc... could you explain how this very important development in the world occurred?

Frontiers has grown rapidly, but the expansion into North America (especially the USA) took time, determination, and a specific setup. This was made possible through a combination of strategic choices, strong partnerships, and a clear vision of bringing a certain type of music to a global audience. We have worked hard to build an effective distribution and promotion network in these territories and are now fully reaping the rewards.

Your "catalog" of artists is huge... you have so many.  I know it's difficult, but is there some artist, band, that you are more attached to or that perhaps surprised you with an unexpected success?

Every artist we have worked with has brought something unique. However, some have had a particularly significant impact. For example, the Toto album "Falling in Between" was a significant project for us, both for its historical importance and for the success it achieved. A turning point, if you will, between the beginnings and what then took shape as the Frontiers I wanted. I could mention others, such as Giant, Journey, Survivor, and more recently Whitesnake, Def Leppard, ELO, BOC, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Megadeth. Each of these represented a strategically fundamental goal for the growth and development of the company.

I have seen that recently you are "expanding" by embracing other heavier, more alternative sounds but also more glamorous ones (to my utmost pleasure… nda). This pleases me as it is a sign of maturity from a businessman to always evolve. Do you agree?

Yes, in recent years we have expanded our catalog to include heavier music, alternative sounds, and generally new sonorities. I believe that evolution is natural to remain relevant in the ever-evolving music landscape. This diversification allows us to attract new fans and offer a variety of sounds to our listeners while keeping intact the original vision of Frontiers.

The record releases are countless, I know it well because I've been reviewing your albums since... when you were born (hehehe…). This is fundamental for me and it is a clear response to those who say that this genre no longer has a market these days or is outdated.

We have always believed in both quality and quantity. The numerous record releases testify to the vitality of our music genre and the continuous interest from the public. Contrary to those who think that rock and metal are outdated genres, our releases prove that there is still a strong demand for this music.

You know what I think... that classic rock and classic metal, but also pomp rock, AOR, etc. still have a strong lifeblood and many fans (you can see this at your Frontiers Festivals!!!). One thing I've never understood: why do radio stations (not all, thankfully) insist on only broadcasting more alternative, crossover genres... okay, that type of market is 'pulling,' but if bands like Shakra, GATC, Sick N Beautiful, Eclipse, Cruzh, The End Machine (the first names that came to my mind... note) were properly 'supported,' maybe even the youngest would understand that real music exists and is second to none... what do you think?

It is true that many alternative genres dominate the radios, but I believe there is still room for everyone. Events like the Frontiers Rock Festival show that there is a passionate and loyal audience. With more support and promotion, even new generations could rediscover and appreciate these sounds. We work for this, to give a future to rock and to the new talents of this great music.

What is the greatest satisfaction that your 'creature', Frontiers, has given you in these almost three decades of activity?

The greatest satisfaction is seeing how Frontiers has become a home for many artists (both young and senior) and a resource for all rock fans. We have created a global community that shares our passion for music. Every success, every album that finds its audience, is a confirmation that we are doing the right thing.

How do you choose the bands to produce and distribute? You will have to make choices among the hundreds of proposals that will come your way...

The selection of artists is an accurate process. We listen carefully to every proposal, evaluating not only the musical quality but also the affinity with our vision and the potential for growth. The goal is to collaborate with artists who share our passion and who can grow with us or help us grow.

Today, as a respected entrepreneur throughout the music business, how important is your 'fan' side for this music? Is there still a part of the rock-loving teenager in your decisions that helps you to make choices?

Absolutely. My love, indeed my passion for music is the foundation of every decision I make. Even as an entrepreneur, I continue to be a passionate fan, and this helps me better understand the needs of artists and fans. This emotional connection is essential for our success.

Talking about you, your inner 'I', how would you define yourself with a single adjective as a person and as a leader and president of one of the largest musical organizations in our industry?

I would define myself as a passionate, determined, and visionary person. As a leader, I strive to inspire my team and the artists I collaborate with, creating a positive and productive work environment. I believe in open communication and mutual growth.

Let’s instead arrive at the fateful Frontiers Festival, now in its seventh edition. Unfortunately, there has been a 'break' of a few years... can you tell me the reason for this break?

The break, also caused by COVID, was necessary to reorganize and better plan future editions. We wanted to ensure that we offered an even more engaging and high-quality experience for our fans. As shown by the success of the last edition, we managed to return with new energy and fresh ideas. The upcoming editions will be no less, we promise!

Surely the Frontiers Festivals is the highlight for thousands of fans, I saw it even in this last edition; rockers from all over Italy and even from all over Europe!!!! When was the idea for the festival born and did you expect such a huge public success?

The idea of the Frontiers Rock Festival was born from the desire to create a real moment of meeting between artists and fans who had been passionately following us from all over the world for years. We wanted to offer an experience that went beyond recorded music, something that was authentic, lived. The remarkable success of the first edition truly moved us: seeing fans arrive from all over Europe, in fact from all over the world, was a confirmation that we had hit the mark. It wasn't a given, but the response gave us the strength to continue for more years and subsequently resume the discussion that had interrupted for a few years.

One of the things - besides the fantastic bands that played, of course - that struck me at your Frontiers Festival was the "communion of intents" that gathered thousands of rockers together, with a spirit and an aura of positivity, friendship, and brotherhood that I haven't seen in a long time. It felt like a festival where everyone knew each other even if, perhaps, one was German and the other Italian. I believe that the credit for this feeling is due to your great love that you have always injected into every one of your works and musical organizations. Do you agree?

You perfectly hit the point. The energy that is felt during the festival is a special one, made of shared passion, respect, and unity. It is a true spirit of rock brotherhood. I believe that this atmosphere is also the result of the fact that we give our all in what we do, always with love and respect for music and for those who love it. The audience feels it and responds in a spontaneous and positive way. It is one of the most beautiful things about our work and motivates us daily to move forward.

I'm curious..... if you had to create an all-stars band, who would you choose as musicians?

Let's say the "classic" lineup of Journey, maybe with Rolie and Cain together. That would really be a dream.

I imagine you are already working on the next Frontiers Festival; do you have any news you can share with me? Also... I was thinking; since, as I mentioned above, Frontiers also embraces bands like Sick 'N Beautiful, Smackbound, The Banishment (just to name a few), have you ever considered the idea of having a second festival, perhaps more 'focused' (even just one day...) that showcases all these sounds?

Yes, we are already thinking about the next edition, and I can already say that there will be some surprises in terms of lineup. We are also considering ways to make the event even more accessible and engaging. As for the idea of a second, more 'focused' festival centered on more modern or alternative sounds, we are already thinking about it. Frontiers now represents a broader range of genres, and we would like to highlight these artists in a dedicated context.

ok dear, we are at the end... do you want to add something, anything...?

I'll give you a "free field" :-) Just a heartfelt thank you. To those who have been following us for years, to those who have discovered us recently, to the artists who collaborate with us, and to those who write about music with passion like you. We have been doing this job for almost thirty years with the enthusiasm of the first day, and we will continue to do it as long as there is someone out there ready to raise their hands under a stage. Rock on!

Well Serafino, it has been a real pleasure to do this interview. Congratulations again for everything you do and for the passion you put into it.
