E' sempre un enorme piacere per il sottoscritto trovarsi al cospetto di un nuovo lavoro della “Casa dei Lords”, è un pò come ricevere un regalino e sperare – ovviamente- che piaccia e si tratti di un disco degno di nota. Infatti è difficile riscontrare lati negativi poiché il mister Christian riesce da sempre a mantenere alto il livello qualitativo nonostante i diversi cambi di line up che si avvicendano – spesso – tra una uscita discografica e l'altra. Tra l'altro, in questo nuovo “Saints....” troviamo alle keyboards (ed anche produttore insieme a James) Mark Mangold e Johan Koleberg dietro le pelli. Rimane il bravissimo guitar man Jimi Bell -oramai punto di riferimento insieme al cantante – e il disco suona magnificamente bene, con tutte le carte in regola per deliziare i palati raffinati dei tantissimi fans sparsi per il mondo. Esce dopo due anni dal penultimo “New World New Eyes” ma, ascoltandolo ben bene, credo abbia qualche “marcia” in più. Suono sontuoso, pomposo, a tratti edulcorato ma anche aggressivo nella migliore tradizione dell'arena rock sound! Trentatré anni non sono una “bazzecola” e il buon James lo sa bene; coadiuvato dagli appena menzionati ed eccelsi musicisti, da sfoggio ad un songwriting sopra le righe e a vocalizzi ancora potenti e modulabili come un tempo, non scalfiti dal passare del tempo. Un vero e autentico must. Ascoltate immediatamente la ballad su base di pianoforte e keys “Avalanche” e poi capirete che non esiste età, tempo, non esiste limite o difficoltà a chi ha insito nel suo essere l'arte, la magia di creare qualcosa che altri (molti) non riuscirebbero nemmeno a immaginare. Non per niente gli HOL sono stati, rimangono e saranno sempre in vetta al music world, maestri del genere pomp rock - Aor sin dal capolavoro omonimo del 1989 e il successivo “Sahara”. “Saints And Sinners” parte alla grande con la title track (anche primo singolo scelto) che cattura subito per il suo incedere commerciale e la sua verve pompous con il giusto refrain che si conficca nel cervello e non va più via. Si va avanti con la più sinfonica “House Of The Lord” impreziosita nelle parti orchestrali di keyboards dal cantato di un tenore. Interessante. E' la volta di “Take It All”, carina ma nella media che invece ci prepara a “Road Warrior”, ottima “power” song che evoca echi di Rainbow, Deep Purple e Kansas (periodo da “In the Spirit Of Things” in poi ...nda), un vero portento di energia e gran classe. Classe cristallina che ci viene regalata anche nella successiva e lunga (oltre sette minuti) “Mistress Of The Dark”; connubio perfetto tra hard rock e pomp rock evocante anch'essa lo spauracchio dei già menzionati Rainbow. Si placano gli animi ma si apre il cuore e rimaniamo estasiati da tanta melodia e pathos che scaturiscono dalla già menzionata ballad “Avalanche” (insieme a “Razzle Dazzle” valgono da sole l'acquisto del disco!). Song lenta basata su un tappeto di keyboards e la superba, melanconica e struggente interpretazione vocale di un superlativo James Christian cullata dall'accompagnamento musicale del pianoforte. Superba! Torniamo invece a rockare con l'energia di “Roll Like Thunder” e poi una delle ciliegine dell'intero disco, “Razzle Dazzle”; una vera arena song, cadenzata e anthemica, dirompente ma al tempo stesso avvolgente, sembra di essere tornati ai tempi del grandioso “Sahara”! Si continua su stilemi hard nella seguente e intrigante “Dreamin It All” ed anche “Takin My Heart Back”, entrambe capaci di far “muovere il piedino” e dotate di ottimi refrain e chorus line nonché del sempre presente e validissimo guitar work di un Jimi Bell in gran spolvero. Chiude questo lavoro l'elegante pompous rock di “Angels Fallen” che decreta l'eccezionale levatura di questa ultima fatica di Christian e soci. Disco da avere, immancabile nella discografia personale di chiunque ami l'ottima musica.

Oh mamma, sono emozionato lo ammetto. Mi sudano i polpastrelli e fatico a digitare le mie impressioni sulla tastiera..... se si parla dei Golden Gate Rhythm Section band di San Francisco nata nel 1972 per poi cambiarsi moniker in Journey e formata dal superlativo guitar hero Neal Schon (tra l'altro unico membro originale rimasto dell'omonimo debut album targato 1975. Questa band è il mammasantissima del melodic (hard) rock mondiale, coloro che hanno istituito il pomp rock e l'Aor, coloro che sono riusciti a vendere oltre 80 milioni di album e, pur con diversi avvicendamenti di formazione, sono sempre stati in grado di regalare grande musica. Ci sono gli estimatori del primissimo periodo con Gregg Rolie alla voce (i primi tre album) in pieni anni settanta poi l'arrivo del (forse) più amato e ricordato vocalist, tale Steve Perry (Rolie rimase in formazione come tastierista e backing vocals) a cui associamo il disco più famoso, “Escape” , che li proiettò definitivamente sul tetto del mondo. Poi nel 2000 l'arrivo del bravissimo Augeri ed infine nel 2008 change e arrivo del filippino Pineda, tuttora in line up. Sono cantanti che hanno contribuito tutti a donare e creare il giusto appeal mantenendo alta la qualità del Journey sound; venendo quindi a questo nuovissimo “Freedom” , che esce a ben 11 anni di distanza dall'ultimo “Eclipse”, non possiamo che rimanere estasiati dalla freschezza compositiva, dalla verve e dal mood che si respira per tutta la durata (è un po' lunghino...ecco questa forse è l'unica “pecca”...73 minuti che, però, per alcuni potrebbe risultare un pregio!) dell'album. Quindici canzoni che ammaliano sin dall'opener “ Together We Run” per concludersi con “Beautiful As You Are“; nessun passo falso, un intelligente mix tra composizioni eufoniche, alcune zuccherose (magari un po' troppo) e radiofoniche ed altre più pompose per poi dar spazio anche a momenti di sano hard rock. Rimango goduriosamente estasiato da come Schon e soci riescano (dopo 50 anni....c-i-n-q-u-a-n-t-a!!!) a sfornare brani di accattivante fm rock quali “The Way We Used To Be”, a darci adrenalina con poderosi riff e guitar work decisamente hard su “Let It Rain”, “All Day and All Night” e “Come Away With Me” - che da sole varrebbero l'acquisto del disco! Non sto nemmeno a menzionare la tecnica usata. Non vorrete mica scherzare. I Journey sono un'autentica macchina da guerra che unisce melodia, pathos e tecnica sopraffina; ascoltatevi “Holdin On” e poi mi saprete dire. Devo ammettere che tutti hanno dato il massimo: il guitar work dell'hero Schon non si discute nemmeno ma anche il prezioso contributo del bravissimo Randy Jackson al basso (in line up nell'86 con “Raised on Radio”, nda) e il monumentale drums work di Narada Michael Walden. Stesso dicasi per il lavoro del mitico Cain alle keyboards e, ovviamente, ciliegina sulla torta , l'ugola di Pineda che offre un'interpretazione vocale sopra le righe su tutte le canzoni e non fa rimpiangere i suoi illustri predecessori. Inutile proseguire; “Freedom” si candida -per il sottoscritto- tra le migliori uscite di questa prima metà del 2022 e sicuramente farà molto parlare di se. Acquisto obbligatorio!

Oh mom, I'm excited I admit. My fingertips sweat and I struggle to type my impressions on the keyboard ..... if we talk about the Golden Gate Rhythm Section band from San Francisco born in 1972 and then changed moniker to Journey and formed by the superlative guitar hero Neal Schon (between he is the only remaining original member of the 1975 debut album of the same name. This band is the mammasantissima of melodic (hard) rock world, those who established pomp rock and Aor, those who managed to sell over 80 million albums and, albeit with various training alternations, they have always been able to give great music. There are the admirers of the very first period with Gregg Rolie on vocals (the first three albums) in the full seventies then the arrival of (perhaps) more beloved and remembered vocalist, this Steve Perry (Rolie remained in training as keyboard player and backing vocals) to whom we associate the most famous album, "Escape", which projected them definitively on the roof of the world. Then in 2000 the arrival of the bravissim o Augeri and finally in 2008 change and arrival of the Filipino Pineda, still in line up. They are singers who have all contributed to giving and creating the right appeal while maintaining the quality of the Journey sound; therefore coming to this brand new "Freedom", which comes out 11 years after the last "Eclipse", we can only be entranced by the compositional freshness, the verve and the mood that reigns throughout the duration (it's a bit long ... this is perhaps the only "flaw" ... 73 minutes which, however, for some could be a virtue!) of the album. Fifteen songs that have captivated since the opener “Together We Run” to conclude with “Beautiful As You Are“; no misstep, an intelligent mix of euphonic compositions, some sugary (perhaps a little too much) and radio and others more pompous and then also giving space to moments of healthy hard rock. I am delighted by how Schon and associates manage (after 50 years .... c-i-n-q-u-a-n-t-a !!!) to churn out captivating fm rock songs such as "The Way We Used To Be", to give us adrenaline with powerful riffs and decidedly hard guitar work on “Let It Rain”, “All Day and All Night” and “Come Away With Me” - which alone would be worth buying the record! I'm not even going to mention the technique used. You don't want to joke. Journey is an authentic war machine that combines melody, pathos and excellent technique; listen to "Holdin On" and then you will be able to tell me. I must admit that everyone gave their best: hero Schon's guitar work is not even discussed but also the precious contribution of the excellent Randy Jackson on bass (in line up in 86 with "Raised on Radio", ed.) And the monumental drums work by Narada Michael Walden. Same goes for the work of the legendary Cain on keyboards and, of course, the icing on the cake, Pineda's uvula which offers an over the top vocal interpretation on all the songs and does not make us regret its illustrious predecessors. It is useless to continue; "Freedom" is a candidate - for myself - among the best releases of this first half of 2022 and will certainly make a lot of talk about it. Purchase required!
