Il 31 gennaio 2022, Frontiers Music Srl ha fatto un annuncio dando il benvenuto ai leggendari hard rocker degli anni '80 Autograph nel roster dell'etichetta. La band, all'epoca, composta dal cantante Simon Daniels, dal chitarrista Jimi Bell, dal bassista Randy Rand e dal batterista Marc Wieland, era prossima a concludere il lavoro sul loro nuovissimo album in studio "Beyond", che l'etichetta aveva previsto per il rilascio più tardi in l'anno. Poco dopo la metà di aprile 2022, Randy ha consegnato i master finali e l'artwork per "Beyond" e stava organizzando i piani per l'uscita con l'etichetta quando ha ricevuto alcune notizie sulla sua salute. E poi, sorprendentemente, solo pochi giorni dopo, il 26 aprile 2022, Randy Rand, uno dei fondatori della band, è morto. Prima della sua prematura scomparsa, ha condiviso con i suoi compagni di band che se gli sarebbe successo qualcosa prima che i piani di rilascio fossero finalizzati, voleva che pubblicassero "Beyond", il suo ultimo lavoro registrato. L'album uscirà quindi il prossimo 18 novembre, ascoltatevi il singolo estratto.

Abbiamo intervistato la bravissima (e bellissima) female guitar hero Orianthi, chitarrista prodigio con alle spalle collaborazioni con Michael Jackson, Alice Cooper, Santana, Carrie Underwood, Michael Bolton e tante altre star internazionali. E' stata una bella chiacchierata, per un'artista simpatica ed umile ma assolutamente nel gotha del guitar world attuale. Leggete.....!!!!

Ciao, sono Roby Comanducci fondatore del Cathouse Italy Rock'n'Roll Project. Per prima cosa grazie per aver accettato questa intervista è un piacere poter rivolgerti qualche domanda...
Bene....direi che per iniziare devo complimentarmi per i tuoi due ultimi lavori “O” del 2020 in studio ed il recente “Live” da me recensiti sul nostro website. Parlando soprattutto dell'ultimo “Live from Hollywood” mi racconti qualche aneddoto e qualche curiosità a riguardo?

Grazie ! Mi sono divertita così tanto a registrare e scrivere “O” con Marti Frederiksen nel 2020 e sono veramente felice che questo album sia piaciuto a molte persone. “Live from Hollywood” è stato un vero spasso anche perchè tante persone persone sono uscite dopo un periodo folle con tutto quello che è successo. L'energia della serata è stata ottimamente ripresa nel dvd grazie a Mark Jacobs che l'ha filmata benissimo. La band è stata incredibile, Micheal Bearden, Glen Sobel e Carmen Vandenberg sono stati veramente speciali.

A mio parere, come live album, ha un mood molto diretto....sembra di essere li sotto al palco anche noi ascoltatori.... credo che sia un ottimo risultato, non credi?

Ci siamo divertiti tutti tantissimo sul palco quella sera. Penso che si capisca, musicalmente siamo andati anche fuori dagli schemi facendo una sorta di jam alla fine di molte canzoni, questo perché l'energia del pubblico era così grande che ci aveva galvanizzato.

Sei una grande chitarrista ed io, lo ammetto, sono un patito di guitar player....sin dagli anni 80.....colleziono album di tantissimi axe men. Mi parli un po' di come sei “nata musicalmente”....del tuo background come chitarrista ed anche come cantante?

Grazie mille. Suono da quando avevo sei anni. Mio padre mi ha messo la chitarra in mano, ho iniziato per un po' con la mano sinistra dato che lui è un musicista mancino, poi mi ha detto "dovresti imparare a usare la mano destra, in questo modo potrai suonare più chitarre e sceglierne diversi tipi ..” ... era totalmente giusto!!! Ho studiato classica quando avevo 10-11 anni, poi ho iniziato a suonare l'elettrica dopo aver assistito a un concerto di Santana. Carlos ha suonato in Europa e sono stata subito ispirata. È stato sicuramente un momento magico per me.

Ho notato che il tuo stile miscela un intrigante modern rock a passaggi bluesy. Una cosa particolare, sembra il giusto mix tra la storia ed il feeling del blues e la modernità attuale in ambiente rock. Sei d'accordo?

Grazie, sì, è decisamente un mix! Quando ho iniziato a suonare chitarra elettrica mi ispiravo a Santana, BB King, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Gary Moore, Freddie King e la lista potrebbe continuare. Invece la parte rock è uscita quando suonavo in cover band ed avevo 15-17 anni. Il mio primo spettacolo di supporto è stato quando avevo 14 anni ed aprii per Steve Vai .. che incredibile chitarrista e meraviglioso essere umano, una persona fantastica con cui ho stretto una forte amicizia!

Nella tua carriera hai collaborato con tantissimi nomi tra cui citerei Michael Jackson, Carlos Santana, Carrie Underwood, Alice Cooper, Michael Bolton; hai qualche curiosità da raccontarmi....com'è stato lavorare con queste star?

È stato un onore ed è stato incredibile poter lavorare con tutti loro. Tutte esperienze diverse dalle quali ho imparato molto e da cui sono stato ispirata. Ho fatto quattro anni con Alice Cooper, è stato uno spettacolo rock horror che celebrava Halloween ogni notte con parti di chitarra orchestrate, coltelli da schivare e pitoni! Alice è uno dei migliori frontman e intrattenitori .. dà sempre tutto sul palco per tutti ed è una delle persone più simpatiche del music world! Michael Jackson è stata un'esperienza incredibile, ho imparato così tanto da lui.. sono stata veramente fortunata per aver avuto modo di conoscerlo e di lavorare così a stretto contatto con lui e la sua straordinaria band e ballerini. Carlos Santana è stato il motivo per cui ho preso la chitarra elettrica ed ho iniziato a suonare, è un caro amico da quando avevo 14 anni, un'autentica leggenda e un incredibile essere umano. Sono veramente grata di averlo conosciuto, aver suonato con lui e avere il suo supporto. È stato un onore lavorare anche con Michael Bolton in due album e fare anche alcuni spettacoli con lui. Che cantante incredibile!! Carrie Underwood è incredibile ed è stato un vero spasso essere invitata un bel po' di volte a suonare con lei.

Ho notato, e la cosa mi fa piacere, che tu metti la tecnica di chitarra al servizio della canzone e non il contrario come molti tuoi colleghi. A quanto pare non ti piace dare sfoggio di iper tecnicismi e assoli lunghissimi; è una scelta o ti viene naturale suonare in questo modo?

Mi occupo sempre prima delle canzoni, poi delle melodie della chitarra i vari intro e l'inserimento tra le parti vocali ecc. Gli assoli di solito sono nella mia testa dopo che ho scritto la melodia, mi piace strutturarli di sicuro ma non troppo però. Viceversa è completamente diverso dal vivo... comincio con la melodia, poi vado via e faccio l'assolo per molto tempo, finché la mia band non mi guarda come dire …. "hai finito..." ….ahah

Come nasce una tua song? Mi puoi descrivere il tuo processo di “creazione” di un brano? Hai qualcosa in particolare a cui fai -spesso- riferimento oppure dipende dai momenti?

Di solito da un'idea di melodia vocale che sto canticchiando, ad essere onesta raramente è un riff di chitarra che fa nascere una mia canzone. Mi occupo prima dei testi e delle melodie, poi costruisco la traccia in base alla sensazione di tutto ciò e vedo cosa ne esce fuori. A volte capita, ovviamente, che stando seduta con la mia chitarra mi venga in mente un riff e una progressione di accordi, quindi la registro sulle note vocali perché magari ha una buona atmosfera e poi ci scrivo i testi più tardi.

Essendo anche una (bella) donna, credi che in questo mondo musicale rock (spesso molto maschilista) molti tendano a trascurare la tua musica a favore del tuo look? Hai mai trovato difficoltà o altro a causa di questo?

Aww.... grazie!!! Penso che vestirsi e avere un bell'aspetto per te stesso sia solo la naturale evoluzione di me come persona che ho maturato crescendo. Per sentirsi bene, per sentirsi femminili. Mi piace esagerare un po' sul palco perché è una specie di costume... se vuoi intrattenere le persone anche questo fa parte del gioco. Tutto va di pari passo, credo. E sì, alcune persone commentano che non prendo tutto sul serio perché mi sono vestita in un certo modo ma a me non importa molto perché so che tutto quello che suono e scrivo viene dal mio cuore, la musica è una parte importante della mia vita, la adoro.

C'è in assoluto un chitarrista che ammiri più degli altri? Oppure....dimmi quali sono i tuoi preferiti del passato e -magari- chi reputi bravo tra le nuove leve.....

Carlos Santana sarà sempre una fonte di ispirazione per me, così come Steve Vai, Jimi Hendrix e Eric Clapton. Per me sono autentici maestri e leggende. Ci sono anche chitarristi fantastici che stanno ispirando tanta gente là fuori in questo momento.. non sono propriamente nuovi, hanno già grandi carriere alle spalle e sono in giro da un po', citerei sicuramente Eric Gales, Joe Bonamassa, John Mayer, Marcus King, Robert Randolf, Gary Clark jr,

Da guitar hero quale sei....puoi fare un riassunto per i nostri lettori dei tuoi strumenti, cosa usi, effetti e principale tecnica usata?

Uso principalmente PRS custom 24 guitar. Ho un bel po' di modelli firmati per quella meravigliosa compagnia/marchio. In questo momento la mia ultima creazione con loro è il “fiore di loto”, è incredibile ed è disponibile ora! Mi piace tantissimo, la trovo bella e valida tecnicamente. Uso Orange Amps Rockerverb MKIII e ne sta uscendo un modello “firmato da me”. Inoltre utilizzo un pedale wah Dunlop, Octave Fuxx pedals ed il mio Klon. Ho anche iniziato a collezionare alcune chitarre elettriche vintage, sono fantastiche. Uso l'acustica Gibson, ho la mia bellissima 'Red Signature j200 che è ora disponibile sul mercato, uno strumento fenomenale!

Ho appena ascoltato il nuovo singolo “Light It Up” che ci prepara al nuovissimo album “Rock Candy”. Hai qualche curiosità da anticiparmi? Sarà sulla linea di “O” oppure....?

Guarda... il titolo “Rock Candy” riassume davvero tutto; un sacco di rock miscelato alle “candy” ovvero le melodie pop ma tutto elaborato in un contesto molto cool!!! Non vedo l'ora che tutti ascoltino questo disco prodotto dal mio buon amico Jacob Bunton.

Un'ultima domanda: potresti definirti prima come artista e poi come persona con l'ausilio di un singolo aggettivo e spiegarmi il perchè?

Come artista direi che sono molto “colorata” e mescolo molti stili diversi. È una combinazione di pop/blues/rock, country e mi piace tantissimo sperimentare. Come persona sono eccentrica e tengo molto alle persone e agli animali (grandissima !!! ...nda). Mi piace pensare di essere una buona amica affidabile e sempre disponibile per le persone che amo, ripeto, amo assolutamente gli animali e spero un giorno di aprire un rifugio e prendermi cura di molti di loro.

Well .... I would say that to start I can congratulate you on your last two “O” works of 2020 in the studio and the recent “Live” reviewed by me on our website. Speaking above all of the latest “Live from Hollywood”, can you tell me some anecdotes and curiosities about it?

Thank you ! I had so much my fun recording and writing “O” with Marti Frederiksen back in 2020 and so happy people liked that record . “Live from Hollywood” was a blast , so many people came out during a crazy time . The energy of the evening really came across on the dvd thanks to mark jacobs who filmed it so well. The band was incredible, having Micheal Bearden and Glen Sobel and Carmen Vandenberg come out was very special.

In my opinion, as a live album, it has a very direct mood .... it seems to be there under the stage also us listeners .... I think it's a great result, don't you think?

We all had such a fun time onstage that evening. I think it comes across, musically we went off and jammed out a lot at the end of tracks because the energy of the audience was so great . 

You are a great guitarist and I, I admit, am a fan of guitar player .... since the 80s ..... I have been collecting albums of many ax men. Can you tell me a little about how you were “born musically” .... your background as a guitarist and also as a singer?

Thank you very much. I have been playing since I was 6 years old . My dad put the guitar in my hands , I started left handed for a bit as he is a left handed player then he said to me “you should learn right handed , you’ll have more guitars to choose from later .. he was totally right lol . I studied classical when I was 10-11 then I started playing electric after attending a santana concert. Carlos played Europa and I was instantly inspired. It was definitely a magical moment for me .

I noticed that your style mixes an intriguing modern rock with bluesy passages. One particular thing, it seems the right mix between the history and the feeling of the blues and the current modernity in a rock environment. Do you agree?

Thank you , yes it’s definitely a mix ! when I started playing electric it was santana , bb king , Jimi Hendrix , Stevie ray Vaughan , Gary Moore , Freddie king and the list goes on .. I’m definitely a blues based player but then I ventured out and got into a lot of rock when I was playing in cover bands when I was 15-17 . My first support show when I was 14 I opened for Steve Vai .. What a incredible guitar player and wonderful human who I’ve been friends with since then .

In your career you have collaborated with many names including Michael Jackson, Carlos Santana, Carrie Underwood, Alice Cooper, Michael Bolton; do you have any curiosity to tell me .... what was it like working with these stars?

It was a honor , incredible to work with all of them . All different experiences that I learned a lot from and was inspired by. 4 years with Alice Cooper , it was a rock horror show celebrating Halloween every night with orchestrated guitar parts , dodging knives and pythons ! Alice is one of the best front men and entertainers ..he always gives it all onstage for everyone and is one of the nicest people. Michael Jackson was incredible experience and I learned so much .. so blessed I got to know him and work so closely with him and the amazing band and dancers . Carlos Santana was the reason why I picked up electric guitar , he has been a dear friend since I was 14 .. what a legend and incredible human .. very grateful to know him, get to jam with him and have his support.It was a honor to work with Michael Bolton on 2 albums and also do some shows with him . What a incredible singer . Carrie underwood is amazing and it was a blast to be asked by her to jam out quite a few times.

I noticed, and I'm glad, that you put the guitar technique at the service of the song and not the other way around like many of your colleagues. Apparently you don't like to show off hyper technicalities and very long solos; is it a choice or does it come naturally to you to play this way?

I’m all about the songs first , then the guitar melodies -intro , in between vocal parts ect . The solos are usually in my head after I’ve written the tune ..i like to structure them for sure ..not too much though.  it’s totally different live .. I start with the Melody then I go off and solo for a long time , until my band look at me like .. “are u done “ haha

How is your song born? Can you describe your process of "creating" a song? Do you have something in particular that you often refer to or does it depend on the moments?

It’s usually a vocal melody idea I’m humming , rarely it’s a guitar riff to be honest . I’m all about the lyrics / Melodies first then I build the track to the feeling of it all . But sometimes I’m sitting with my guitar and I’ll come up with a riff and chord progression , record it on voice notes as it’s got a vibe then write lyrics to it later .

Also being a (beautiful) woman, do you think that in this (often very macho) rock music world many tend to neglect your music in favor of your look? Have you ever found difficulties or anything because of this?

Aww thank you . I think dressing up and looking good for yourself is just something I was brought up doing . To feel Good , to feel feminine. I like to go over the top onstage a bit as it’s kind of a costume .. you want to entertain people . It all goes hand in hand I think. And yes I do get some people commenting that I don’t take it all seriously because I’ve dressed up a certain way .. it doesn’t matter to me that much because i know when I play and write it’s from my heart . music is a big part of my life , I love it .

Is there ever a guitarist you admire more than others? Or ... tell me what are your favorites from the past and - maybe - who do you think is good among the new generation .....

Carlos Santana will always be a inspiration to me as will Steve Vai and jimi Hendrix , Eric Clapton . There are amazing players who are inspiring so many out there right now .. they aren’t new , they have great careers and been around for a while but definitely ..Eric gales , Joe Bonamassa, John Mayer, Marcus King , Robert Randolf , Gary Clark jr

As a guitar hero you are .... can you make a summary for our readers of your instruments, what do you use, effects and main technique used?

I use PRS custom 24 guitars. I have quite a few signature models through that wonderful company. Right now my newest creation with them is the lotus bloom , it’s incredible and available now ! I just love it so much. I use orange amplifiers .. rockerverb mark3 and I have a signature coming out soon. I use a Dunlop wah pedal, and octave fuzz and my klon. I also have started collecting some vintage electric guitars.. I use gibson acoustics , I have my beautiful red signature j200 that’s available now too.

I just listened to the new single “Light It Up” which prepares us for the brand new album “Rock Candy”. Do you have any curiosity to anticipate? Will it be on the line of "O" or ....?

The title really sums it all up .. a lot of rock and the Candy is the pop melodies throughout it all! I can’t wait for everyone to hear this record produced by my good friend Jacob bunton .

One last question: could you define yourself first as an artist and then as a person with the help of a single adjective and explain to me why?

As a artist I’m colorful. I blend a lot of different styles. It’s a combination of pop / blues / rock , country and I like to experiment. As a person I’m eccentric and care a lot about people and animals and I like to think I’m a good reliable friend, always there for people I love, I absolutely love animals and hope to open a shelter one day and take care of a lot of them.

Killer Kings sono un'alleanza musicale tra Gregory Lynn Hall (ex-101 South) e Tristan Avakian (ex- Alba Rossa, Regina Stravaganza). La band ha pubblicato non uno, ma due nuovi singoli.
