Bei tempi hehe

Ok Partiamo con le domande...

Per prima cosa complimenti per l'ultimissimo “Saints...” sarà recensito in questi giorni sempre nel nostro magazine. Per me un eccellente lavoro, forse anche superiore agli ultimi due “New World New Eyes” e “Saints of The Lost Souls”. Mi racconti com'è nato l'album e quali sono, secondo te, le qualità più salienti?

Ciao Roby, allora .... quando ho iniziato il processo per questo cd mi è venuto in mente di pensare a ciò che avevamo fatto al tempo dei nostri primi tre album, ma non per copiare piuttosto per ispirarmi. Mi sono reso conto che avevamo molte più tastiere su quegli album e più tracce Aor. Quindi sapevo cosa volevo per questo album ma non avevo un tastierista che potesse condividere con me anche questa visione. Dopo aver terminato alcune canzoni con Jimi (Bell, il chitarrista, nda), ho iniziato a guardarmi “in giro” per cercare persone diverse con cui scrivere insieme. Durante quel periodo, la mia amica Fiona mi chiamò e mi parlò di Mark Mangold. Ci ha presentato e abbiamo iniziato a lavorare sulle canzoni, le prime due non sono arrivate sul cd, ma la terza canzone era "House Of The Lord" e con quel pezzo ho capito che cose iniziavano a prendere la giusta forma e ho capito di aver trovato la giusta persona con cui lavorare. Ho anche scritto insieme a Tommy Denander, Kristain Fyhr e Michael Palace

C'è stato un ulteriore cambio di line up, ma nella product information non vedo citato il bassista. Chi suona il basso e, in generale, come ti trovi con i nuovi Mangold e Koleberg? Hanno contribuito anche alla stesura dei brani?

Sul cd ho suonato sempre io il basso tranne in due canzoni. Mi è sembrato giusto perché stavo scrivendo le tracce difficili e mentre stavo mettendo il basso ho pensato, so cosa voglio, quindi perché non finire il lavoro direttamente io. Mi sono davvero divertito. Ma Chris Tristram (il bassista che li segue dal 2016...nda) sarà in tour con la band. B.J. Zampa sta suonando con i Dokken in questo momento, quindi avevo bisogno di trovare un batterista che potesse davvero aggiungere la magia nella sezione ritmica. Quel ragazzo era Johan Kullberg, è stato Khalil Turk a consigliarmelo.

Ho notato che questo album inizia melodico per poi farsi sempre più hard e pomposo nel prosieguo ed arrivare a song come “Razzle Dazzle” che, onestamente e per mia gioia, mi fanno rivivere i fasti di “Sahara”. Cosa ne pensi?

Beh, penso che sia una coincidenza perché è iniziato come un tipo di traccia stile Zeppelin, ma non appena abbiamo iniziato a sovrapporre tastiere e sfondi del ritornello, la canzone è cambiata un po'. Immagino si possa dire che è diventata più una canzone che avrebbe potuto essere inserita in “Sahara” ed è uno dei miei brani preferiti del disco. È stato molto divertente cantare quella canzone.

Il titolo dell'album cita “Saints and Sinner”. C'è un legame con il songwriting, un filo conduttore? Chi sono i “santi” e chi sono i “peccatori” nel mondo, nella musica o nella vita secondo il tuo parere?

È stata Santa Teresa di Calcutta a dire "I santi sono solo peccatori che continuano a provare". Il messaggio di “Saints..” è che tutti noi possediamo entrambe le caratteristiche nella vita di tutti i giorni. Facciamo cose buone e cattive, siamo onesti e talvolta disonesti. Siamo veritieri e bugiardi. Il testo è ammantato di immagini in modo che l'ascoltatore possa decidere cosa significhi per lui.

Mi piace molto anche “Road Warrior” dove, correggimi se sbaglio, mi sembra di carpire echi di Rainbow, Kansas e Deep Purple.... ?

Si...hai ragione. Una volta che Mark ha registrato la sua tastiera combinata Killer B3 Monster, la sensazione e l'atteggiamento della canzone erano a posto. È anche uno dei miei brani preferiti e sarà fantastico farlo dal vivo. Fa pompare il sangue. Un avvertimento: fai attenzione se stai guidando mentre ascolti questa song, molto probabilmente inizierai ad accelerare. Io l'ho fatto!!! (risata...)

Un'altra song che adoro è la bellissima ballad “Avalanche”, dove ti esprimi con una interpretazione vocale superba; qual'è il segreto di aver mantenuto dopo 30 anni una timbrica ancora così perfetta? Sembra che non sia passato il tempo per te ....

Questa è una canzone che significava molto per me. Avevo bisogno di catturare ciò che sentivo dentro e il testo che ho buttato giù mi commuoveva. L'ultima volta che mi sono sentito così su una ballata è stata "Remember My Name" (sempre dal già menzonato album “Sahara”...nda). Nella canzone suona solo Mark Mangold e io, ma la traccia si distingue per l'incredibile melodia e, soprattutto, il messaggio. Per quanto riguarda la mia voce ti dico che si è adattata ai miei anni, ma questa canzone “Avalanche” per esempio, ha richiesto un maggiore lavoro del mio cantato, quindi l'ho spinta al limite e sono così felice di averlo fatto perché meritava tutto ciò che potevo dare.

Come nasce una song degli House of Lords? Prima la musica poi testi oppure.....dimmi tu....

A volte è solo un riff, altre volte è solo un testo, oppure diciamo che abbiamo bisogno di creare una canzone, quindi proviamo diverse volte ci lavoriamo su ma, nella maggior parte dei casi, Jimi Bell mi invia tracce già ben definite sulle quali è facile sviluppare l'idea e vedere dove è diretta la canzone anche prima di inserire una melodia. Anche Mark Mangold sovente ha buone idee sulle canzoni che gli vengono presentate e ci lavora sopra. Nel mio caso invece, devo immaginare la voce prima di cantarla. Non voglio guardare un testo quando faccio una linea vocale, questo perchè deve prima scaturire dalla mia testa e dal cuore.

Siamo in un mondo oramai molto “alternativo” e distante dai periodi d'oro dell'hair metal/hard rock ottantiano, periodo nel quale voi siete nati. Che differenze trovi tra allora e adesso nel music world e credi che possa esserci un forte ritorno del classico hard rock ai livelli di un tempo?

Penso che il melodic rock avrà sempre un pubblico, ma non sono sicuro che sarà mai più mainstream. Proprio come la musica degli anni '50, degli anni '60 e '70 è tutta lì da apprezzare, e penso anche che sia lì per le band più giovani, per dare loro ispirazione e idee. Gli anni '80 hanno fatto il loro tempo ed è stato fantastico!!!

Da grande cantante e performer quale sei cosa consiglieresti ad un giovane cantante alle prime armi? Soprattutto in questo periodo musicale che stiamo vivendo....

Francamente ci sono dei grandi giovani cantanti attualmente nel music world. Alcune delle band emergenti della Frontiers hanno dei cantanti veramente bravi. Una in particolare è
Chez Kane, una cantante di livello mondiale!

Una domanda particolare: come ti definiresti prima come artista e poi come semplice persona utilizzando un singolo aggettivo e perchè?

Direi “dedicato”, sia come come artista che come persona. Quando hai passione nella vita, la trasmetti sicuramente anche nel tuo lavoro. Quindi mi dedico alla musica in tutte le sue diverse forme per accontentare il mio pubblico. Però, noto, che i miei fan tendono a preferire il mio lavoro come artista fatto negli anni '80, questo lo scopri quando pubblichi un cd che è leggermente diverso da come – magari- si aspettavano. Puoi star certo che ben presto lo vieni a sapere direttamente da loro!!

Quali sono, dopo l'uscita dell'album, i progetti imminenti per la band? Spero che torniate presto a suonare da noi in Italia.

Amo esibirmi in Italia. Ho intenzione di trascorrere un po' di tempo da voi nel prossimo tour. Ho molti amici musicisti lì e parenti stretti in Italia. In questo momento sto lavorando al nuovo cd di Robins e stiamo raccogliendo canzoni e scrivendone altre. Per quanto riguarda gli altri progetti per la band, fare un tour su questo CD è molto importante per me. Mark Mangold si unirà a noi in questo tour e ho intenzione di allargare un po' la band in termini di musicisti ospiti in modo da riuscire a suonare tante nostre song ripescandole un po' da tutti i nostri vecchi dischi. Mark , ad esempio, suona dal vivo con una strumentazione pazzesca ma, in ogni caso, il vantaggio è il suono straordinario che proviene da ogni singolo musicista. Tutto questo sarà di buon auspicio per quando suoneremo dal vivo anche i brani dei primi anni degli House Of Lords

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

First of all, congratulations for the latest “Saints ...” will be reviewed in these days always in our magazine. For me an excellent job, perhaps even better than the last two "New World New Eyes" and "Saints of The Lost Souls". Can you tell me how the album was born and what are, in your opinion, the most salient qualities?

Hi Roby, When I started the process for this CD, I had in my mind that I would look back at what we were doing during the 1stt 3 Albums, Not to copy but to inspire me. I realized we had much more Keyboards on those Albums as well as more AOR tracks. So I knew what I wanted but I did not have a Keyboard player who could also share this vision. After finishing a few songs with Jimi, I started looking at different people to co-write with. During that time, My friend Fiona called and told me about Mark Mangold. She introduced us and we started working on song songs, the first 2 songs did not make it on the CD, but the third song was “House Of The Lord” and that’s when things started to take shape and I knew I had found the right person to work with. I also co-wrote with Tommy Denander, Kristain Fyhr, Michael Palace as well

There has been a further change of line up, but in the product information I don't see the bass player mentioned. Who plays the bass and, in general, how do you feel with the new Mangold and Koleberg? Did they also contribute to the writing of the songs?

On the CD I played Bass except for 2 songs. It just felt right to me because I was laying down the rough tracks and as I was putting the Bass guitar on I just thought, I know what I want so why not just finish the Job. I really enjoyed it. But Chris Tristram will be touring with the band. B.J. Zampa is playing with Dokken right now so I needed to find a drummer who could really add the magic in the rhythm section. That guy was Johan Kullberg. It was Khalil Turk who recommended him to me.

I noticed that this album starts melodic and then becomes more and more hard and pompous in the continuation and arrive at songs like "Razzle Dazzle" which, honestly and to my delight, make me relive the glories of "Sahara". What do you think?

Well I think that is by coincidence because it started out as a Zepplin type of track, but as soon as we started layering Keyboards and Chorus Backgrounds the song changed quite a bit. I guess you could say it became more of a song that could have fit on Sahara Album. It's one of my many favorites on the CD. It was a lot of fun to sing that song.

The album title quotes “Saints and Sinner”. Is there a link with songwriting, a common thread? Who are the "saints" and who are the "sinners" in the world, in music, in life according to your opinion?

It was Saint Teresa Of Calcutta who said “Saints are only Sinners who keep trying.” The message of the song is that we all pocess both traits in everyday life. We do good things and Bad, We are honest and sometimes dishonest. We are truth tellers and liars. The lyric is Cloaked in imagery so the listener can decide what it means to them.

I also really like “Road Warrior” where, correct me if I'm wrong, I seem to catch echoes of Rainbow, Kansas and Deep Purple ....?

You are correct. Once Mark had his Killer B3 Monster combination keyboard recorded the song feel and attitude was in place. It is also One of my favorites and will be awesome to perform LIVE. It gets the Blood pumping. One Warning: Be careful if you are Driving and Listening. You most likely will start speeding. I DID!

Another song that I love is the beautiful “Avalanche” ballad, where you express yourself with a superb vocal interpretation; what is the secret of having maintained such a perfect tone after 30 years? It seems like no time has passed for you he he ....

This was a song that meant a lot to me. I needed to capture what I was feeling inside and how the lyric moved me. Last time I felt this way about a ballad was “Remember My Name” it's just Mark Mangold and myself on the song, but the track stands out because of the incredible melody and most important the message. My voice has adapted to my years but this song demanded more of me so I pushed it to the limit, and I’m so happy that I did because the song deserved everything I could give.

How is a House of Lords song born? Music first then lyrics or ..... you tell me ....

Sometimes, its just a riff, others times are just a Lyric, or we say we need a song at a certain Tempo, and then start a click track and work from there, but in most cases as it pertains to Jimi Bell, he sends me well defined tracks so its easy to see where the song is headed even before we put on a Melody. Mark Mangold also has a real good idea of the song when it is presented. For me I have to imagine the vocal before I sing it. I don’t wanna be looking at a lyric sheet when I do a vocal so it has to be in my head and from the heart every time.

We are in a world now very "alternative" and far from the golden age of 80's hair metal / hard rock, the period in which you were born. What differences do you find between then and now in the music world and do you think there can be a strong return of classic hard rock to the levels of a time?

I think Melodic Rock will always have an audience, but I’m not sure if will ever be mainstream again. Just like the 50’s music 60’s and 70’s its all there to appreciate, but I think its there for the younger bands to draw inspiration and ideas from. The 80’s had its day and it

As a great singer and performer which are you, what would you recommend to a young singer novice? Especially in this musical period we are experiencing

Quite frankly there are some great young singers out there. Some of the up and coming Frontiers bands have some strong singers. One in particular is Chez Kane. She is a World Class singer.

A particular question: how would you define yourself first as an artist and then as a simple person using a single adjective and why?

Dedicated as an Artist and as a Person. When you have passion in life, it crosses over to your life’s work as well. So I’m dedicated to music in all its different forms. My fans tend to prefer my work as an 80’s performer. You find this out when you release a CD that is a little different than they expected. They let you know pretty quickly.

What are, after the release of the album, the upcoming projects for the band? I hope you will soon return to play with us in Italy.

I love performing in Italy. I intend to spend some time there on this next tour. I have lots of musician friends there as well as immediate family. I am working on Robins new CD right now and we are gathering songs and writing others. As far as other projects for the band, touring on this CD is very important to me. Mark Mangold will be joining us on this tour and I intend to make the band a little larger in terms of players in order to really display the Bands catalog of songs from the Beginning to the present. Mark travels with his own setup which is huge, but the payoff is the tremendous sound that comes from one musician. This will bode well for when we cover the early HOL CD’s
