INTERVISTA PRAYING MANTIS

Abbiamo raggiunto un loquace e simpatico Chris Troy, co-leader e bass/vocalist dei leggendari Praying Mantis per farci raccontare qualcosa di interessante sul loro nuovissimo album “Katharsis” (uscito per Frontiers Music srl)

Ciao Chris, è un piacere poterti rivolgere alcune domande a seguito dell'uscita dell'ottimo "Katharsis". La prima è molto semplice: raccontami come è stata la procedura di creazione dell'album, considerando anche il periodo dovuto al lockdown da Covid.
Senza dubbio, come molte altre band/artisti, il periodo del Covid ha creato un ambiente di lavoro totalmente diverso. Quindi, per questa situazione, ognuno di noi ha lavorato sulle proprie idee e le ha inserite gradualmente su una piattaforma condivisa. La metodologia, comunque, è stata efficace, l'album era come una torta alla quale gradualmente sono stati aggiunti diversi strati. Per questo motivo c'era molta incertezza su come sarebbero andate le cose alla fine. Non c'è dubbio che è stato difficile non poter essere nello stesso studio per condividere le idee e svilupparle tutti insieme. Quindi, date le circostanze, siamo stati estremamente contenti di come sia uscito questo album.
Ho notato un ulteriore sviluppo della parte melodica nel tuo sound, pur rimanendo sempre sulle tracce dell'heavy rock. Sei d'accordo?
La melodia ha sempre fatto parte della “Mantide Religiosa” sin dal suo primo concepimento, sin dagli esordi. Ma se dal punto di vista dell'ascoltatore si vede che stiamo sviluppando ulteriormente quella caratteristica, allora lo prendiamo umilmente come un grande complimento. Allo stesso tempo però non volevamo ammorbidire troppo il suono e quindi abbiamo cercato di ottenere un po' di aggressività.... in definitiva sono pienamente d'accordo con quanto dici.
Secondo me i due nuovi membri che sono in formazione da due album Jaycee e Hans hanno dato ulteriore vigore e linfa al tuo modo di scrivere. Cosa ne pensi?
È un disco …..(risata), scusa il gioco di parole. Comunque questo è il terzo album con la stessa formazione, e naturalmente crediamo che mantenere la stessa line up abbia sviluppato il songwriting delle canzoni e l'unità del suono. Pensiamo che la loro aggiunta abbia fornito una profondità maggiore su tutti i fronti.
Sono rimasto molto colpito sia dal video ma soprattutto dalla musica del singolo "Cry For The Nations". Penso sia una canzone molto profonda e sentita, volete dare un messaggio in particolare con questa canzone?
“Children of the Earth” (song del primo album “Time Tells No Lies” del 1981...nda ) è stata, credo, una delle prime song, uno dei primi testi composti dal sottoscritto quando avevo circa 17 anni. Tino inventò la musica e penso che il ritornello sia ancora uno dei più forti che abbiamo mai creato. Anche allora mi sentivo affranto verso la distruzione del pianeta da parte dell'uomo e usavo la musica per trasmettere quel messaggio, il mio messaggio! Eccoci quindi nel 2022 quasi 50 anni dopo la scrittura di quel testo ma credo che tutti sarebbero d'accordo sul fatto che i nostri messaggi erano in linea con quanto stava succedendo, i governi gestivano come volevano la gente e la comunicazione non arrivava corretta alle masse; era già in atto l'inizio della distruzione della nostra madre terra che si è protratta sviluppandosi fino ai giorni nostri. “Cry for the Nations” è una canzone sulla stessa linea, un'altra vetrina dello stesso messaggio anche se, sfortunatamente, penso davvero che questa volta abbiamo superato il punto di non ritorno. Sì... c'è molta emozione in questa canzone.
Tecnicamente parlando: come nasce una vostra song? Prima la musica poi il testo, prima un'idea su cui si sviluppa poi in sala di registrazione o è tutto molto più naturale?
Dal mio punto di vista il 90% delle volte ho prima l'idea musicale e poi stampo i testi per adattarli. L'unica composta diversamente è stata la già menzionata “Children of the Earth”, in cui il testo è arrivato prima della musica.
Qual è la caratteristica principale di questo nuovo album? Dimmelo con un singolo aggettivo e spiegaci perché...
Non c'è una caratteristica comune o un singolo aggettivo. Il punto chiave è che con il contributo di diversi songwriter, noi tutti della band, il prodotto finale è un album vario e mai monotono, lo hanno detto anche la maggior parte dei critici e dei fan dopo l'ascolto. Per me questa è una grande caratteristica in quanto è facile che in un album le canzoni tendano a somigliarsi...ecco, questo non si può certo dire per “Katharsis”
Ci siete dal 1974, una lunga carriera in cui avete fatto parte anche della New Wave Of British Heavy Metal. Cosa ricordi di quel fantastico periodo?
L'era NWOBHM è arrivata subito dopo il punk e sembrava solo un po' di aria fresca sulla scena musicale. Molte persone hanno detto che non appartenevamo davvero alla NWOBHM a causa delle nostre sottigliezze musicali, tuttavia non possiamo lamentarci perché è stato un veicolo che ci ha portato lontano. Penso che la musica di allora avesse dei grandi spunti, era più “fresca”, mentre ora sta diventando un luogo molto comune, ma forse è perché è stato tutto fatto prima, quindi tutto ciò che resta è solo un rigurgito in una forma leggermente diversa.
Secondo te, l'approccio alla musica che le band attuali hanno è completamente diverso da quello che avevi tu, ad esempio, negli anni Ottanta?
Gli strumenti che sono ora disponibili come dispositivi di registrazione, amplificatori ecc... sono completamente diversi adesso. Le piattaforme di scrittura/registrazione come Logic e Cubase, solo per citarne un paio, sono un vantaggio fenomenale per la scrittura e certamente rendono più facile trasmettere idee al resto della band. Ricordiamo con affetto il nastro da 2 pollici di 24 tracce che doveva essere tagliato quando una strofa di una canzone era semplicemente troppo lunga!! ..... Ci sono volute molta abilità ed esperienza da parte dell'ingegnere di studio per tagliare il nastro nella parte giusta, e ricordiamo alcune volte in cui il nastro era stato unito così tante volte che sembrava che fosse stato coinvolto in un incidente? !!!...(risata...nda)
Perfetto, per ultimo vuoi dire qualcosa ai tuoi fan in Italia?
Se ci sono fans italiani dei Praying Mantis che hanno l'età mia e di Tino va benissimo, vuol dire che ci seguite da tanto (risata...nda). A parte gli scherzi….. un grazie immenso per il vostro supporto in tutti questi favolosi anni nei quali abbiamo avuto il privilegio di suonare per voi. Ai nuovi arrivati diamo il benvenuto e speriamo di poter andare avanti per altri 50 anni?!

Hello Chris, it is a pleasure to be able to ask you some questions following the release of the excellent "Katharsis". The first question is simple: tell me about how the album creation procedure was, also considering the period due to the Covid lockdown.
No doubt like many other bands/ artists the Covid period created a totally different working environment . So for this situation we each really worked on our own ideas and gradually shared them on a shared platform . So effectively the album was like a cloud based cake , which gradually got the layers. Because of that there was quite a lot of uncertainly how things would eventually turn out. There is no doubt it was so difficult not being able to be in the same studio to share the ideas and develop them. So under the circumstances we were extremely pleased how this album came out.
I noticed a further development of the melodic part in your sound, while always remaining on the tracks of heavy rock. Do you agree?
Melody has always been a part of Praying mantis from its early conception. But if its come across from a listeners perspective that we are further developing that trait, then its taken humbly as a big compliment .At the same time we did not want to soften the sound too much so aim to get some aggressiveness in there, so fully agree.
In my opinion the two new members who are in line up from two albums Jaycee and Hans have given further vigor and lymph to your songwriting. What do you think?
It is a record ( excuse the pun?) that this is the third album with the same line up , and naturally we believe maintaining that same line up has developed the song writing and the unity of the sound. We think their addition to mantis has provided a much greater depth on all fronts.
I was very impressed by both the video but above all the music of the single "Cry For The Nations". I feel it is a very deep heartfelt song, do you want to give some particular message with this song?
Children of the earth was I believe the very first set of lyrics that I ever composed when I was about 17. Tino came up with the music , and I think the chorus is still one of the strongest we have ever written. Even then I felt so strong about mans destruction of the planet and used music to put across that message . Here we are in 2022 approaching some 50 years after those lyrics were written and I think everyone would agree, all the messages were already on the wall at the time to all the governing bodies around the world. Of course there was the usual crappy lip service to the masses , yet nothing was done, and in fact the destruction of our mother earth has just gathered at an accelerating and alarming pace. Cry for the Nations is a song on the same lines, another showcase of that same message, though unfortunately I really think this time we are past the point of no return. Sop yes there is a lot of emotion in the song.
Technically speaking: how is your song born? First the music then the lyrics, first an idea on which you develop then in the recording room or is it all much more natural?
From my perspective 90% of the time I have the musical idea first and then ai mould the lyrics to fit. Following on the from the point above. Children of the earth was the only song I believe where the lyrics came first .
What is the main feature of this new album? Tell me with an adjective and explain why …
There really isn’t a common feature. The key point is that with the contribution of different writers the end product is a diverse album which most critics and fans have stated. To me that is a great feature as its so easy for an album to come across as a bit samey throughout. That’s certainly cannot be said for Katharsis
You have been there since 1974, a long career in which you have been part of the New Wave Of British Heavy Meal. What do you remember of that fantastic period?
The NWOBHM era came soon after punk and just seemed like a bit of fresh air to the musical scene. Many people said we didn’t really belong in the NWOBHM because of the musical subtleties , however we cannot complain as it was a vehicle that took us a long way. I think music back then did have some great fresh edges to it whereas now its all becoming very common place, but maybe that’s because it’s all been done before so all that’s left is just a regurgitation in a slightly different form.
In your opinion, is the approach to music that current bands have completely different from what you had, for example, in the eighties?
The tools that are available now such as recording devices, amplifiers , etc are a completely far cry from when we were developing musically. The writing/ recording platforms such as Logic and Cubase, to name just a couple ,are phenomenal benefit for writing, and certainly makes it easier to put across ideas to the rest of the band, etc . We remember fondly the 24 track 2 inch tape that needed to be cut when a verse in a song was just too long !!..... It took a lot of skill and experience by the studio engineer to cut the tape in the right place, and we recall a few times where the tape had been joined so many times it looked as though it had been in an accident? !!!...
Perfect, last you want to say something to your fans in Italy?
If there are any Italian Praying Mantis fans who are as old as Tino and me, you are doing well ?….. immense thank you for your support for all these fabulous years that we have had the privilege to play to you. To the newcomers , welcome dear fans and hope we can carry on going for another 50 years ? !
